Not sure what they mean by "Error in navigation" That area is lit up like a xmas tree with nav lights.

Men escape as ship hits
Men escape as ship hits Hillarys rocks
Two men have been rescued after their boat struck the reef on the entrance of Hillarys Marina last night.
Inspector Jeff Ellis said the commercial vessel called Nautica hit the reef at Crowes Rock about 12.30am.
Water police and sea rescue staff rushed to the shipwreck and rescued two men who were on the boat.
Both escaped the crash unharmed, Inspector Ellis said.
The vessel is currently sitting at a 60 degree angle and is taking water.
Salvage operations to remove the boat will get underway later today.

id almost bet that alcohol
id almost bet that alcohol was involved
the skipper should have his licence taken away
and sent for retraining
what if he hit a small boat due to navigation error ?

Pretty sure you have to have insurance on a charter boat.Maybe he was coming back from the river and drove straight past the entrance to the marina and ploughed into cow rocks??.

Should be charged with not
Should be charged with not keeping a proper look-out. What a dick. Just lucky the boat wasn't full of punters. As someone said GPS, nav lights knowing the area etc etc. Falling asleep yeah full of piss.

Yes you do! How many people
Yes you do! How many people die on our roads from falling asleep at the wheel. No one says that to truck drivers. Just coz its a boat it shouldnt make a difference. Wow. I am in a defensive mood today... Go Me!

You guys are so mean. It was at 12:30am. The guy probably does night charters all the time. If thats what you do for a living, it is very easy to get tired. Late nights all the time suck. Trust me. When I drive home after a few late shifts, sometimes i feel my eyes close and it freaks me out... and i do the same trip home everyday... and it is lit up like a xmas tree. Give the guy a break. :)

Helen been there
done that 16hr night shifts, to me no excuses for a professional, doesnt matter what hour of the day or night. Yes give the guy a break, we are all human and do make mistakes, bet he won't do that again, just grateful nobody was badly injured or died, the only thing injured I think was their pride.

Should still be charged. He's the skipper of that vessel. Give him a break sure... what if his crewman drowned ,that's negligence.

what if this what if that
Too many what ifs give the guy a break, shit happens so do accidents and no one was hurt so why create possible scenarios that didnt even happen.. Some people got nothing better to do than bitch about mistakes others make and give their two cents worth.. And it would make you a complete twat if it was a genuine accident..!

second time
You all seem to have forgot that we(WVSRG) had to go out at 12.20am to assist them
This is the second time we have had to attend to charter boat that has hit a reef at night near hillarys boat harbour. The first one hit boy in a boat reef just south. His excuse was he knocked the steering which took it out of auto pilot.
Professionals should not hit reef, especially when it is full moon and plenty of nav lights. regardless of excuse they should loose there ticket unless mechanical fault. Lucky there were no other vessels in the area.

I still have the memory of
I still have the memory of the dad who took his young bloke out fishing around Eagle/Bunker Bays for the first time, 500m - 1km off shore. 2004 i think.
Mum said " Be careful etc etc. He told Mum they would be home later and not to worry.
The skipper of the cray boat that hit them, was not manning the helm,
Nothing is going to bring the young boy back.
And his Father has to live with that every day of his life, as does the ex-Skipper.
Absolutely NO Excuse for a Boat that size, to be without someone competent to be on watch.
For the people making light of this situation, i assure you the Authorities will take this very seriously, as they should.

Knowledge
No where does it say that he was the regular skipper and did he have any local knowledge. I have never been in there at night so cannot comment on how difficult it is but having gone into many other marinas and harbours at night the position of lead lights leave a lot to be desired. Most times they are a flashing white at differnent intervals and with street and vehicle lights behind them it is very easy to run out of the channel. Geraldton , Fremantle and Port Hedland with the lights on the main street straight in line. are good examples of this.

I still disagree... I would
I still disagree... I would rather the bloke who robbed my house get charged than the guy who made a mistake. Yes he should have been more responsible and I dont disagree with that, but it was a mistake not a criminal offence. Chances are the guy owned the boat, so he was probably working his ass off. Running his charters as often as possible as well as doing all the paperwork and maintenance in his spare time. I have been on two 5 day charters to the abrolhos and have seen for myself the ridiculous hours Craig put in to make sure we caught fish. At 5am Craig would get up to take the boat out to the fist fishing spot of the day for those who wanted to get up early and others caught up on sleep. Fishing all day, then dinner and then late night fishing till anywhere up to 2am or 3am in the morning for those who were having a blast with the night fishing. He sometimes only got a few hours a night. Its his job to make sure we get our money’s worth and make everyone happy, but I can tell you now, I would never have been able to stay up all those hours. I had to nap. Its hard work fishing for 12-16 hours a day, 5 days in a row... or maybe its just coz im a girl and can’t keep up. :P

The owner was not driving the boat, So there goes your theory.
The skipper was in a paid position, and no other boat was involved.
No matter what way you spin it, the skipper is negligent. That is a fact !!
Of course it was an accident, but unlike motor vehicles they rarely end well.

I guess that is why there is
I guess that is why there is an inquiry into the event. If he is proven to be negligent then so be it. A skipper has to be competent all the time, whether he is tired or not. Fortunately there was nobody in his path.

definately not good!!!!!
either he was relying on autopilot which would be strange that close to the marina or going to fast to navigate with his plotter accurately/with time to adjust course or on the piss, either way im glad i wasn"t coming out or going in to the marina in my boat , it makes you cringe just thinking about the possibilities !!! just like a 20 tonne semi on the road with the driver asleep !! what a dick!!!!!!!

GPS's and auto pilots aside, what about the safe water west cardinal marker that's visible for miles. Wouldn't even pass your RST with out knowing your cardinal markers.
Obviously some reasonable mistake on the skippers behalf, bit of a head scratcher though on how you'd miss cow rocks. Familiar or unfamiliar with the area.

For those that have commented
For those that have commented on using his GPS. Don't get caught out by using your GPS at night with out a excellent lookout. They can move and often you can be a long way from were you are supposed to be. Especially when the yanks are playing war games..
Sounds like a big mistake. Sad for him as it going to cost big dollars. May not have been asleep. Late at night and just tied is enough to confuse you sometimes.
There's quite a few boats down at Hillary's on the hard at the moment from having rocky moments..Hehe
