Sad out come but there's 3.5
Sad out come but there's 3.5 meter swell out there, 5 fathom takes out a lot of energy, but close to Carnac is still a no go.

I was going to go out
Changed mind. Done same as Moking squid. Unfortunatley they thought epirb was water activated. At least he got to it . Not a good outcome at all.

No good to hear.
Was going to go today as well. had planned on going tommorow instead but the swell is still 3.2m. Even Bom underestimated the swell which is rare. Hopefully drops off by tommorow.

Pulling Pots
Very Sad
I chose not to go out yesterday because of the swell. Pulling pots only adds to the danger.
Who knows what actually happened but pulling a heavy cray pot - all that weight on one side of the boat in a heavy swell is a recipe for disaster.
Most of us take undue risks on the water at times and its a lesson for us all to be more carefull

agree ranmar imo even
agree ranmar
imo even though bom may have forecast the swell to be say 3.5 metres and the live swell graph may well be showing the same thing , youcan be sure you are going to get sets that will at random times of the day come through a metre or so bigger than the average
we regularly set pots down south in 6-10 metres of water ...... so im always mindfull to suss it out for a short time before we head over and put a pot rope on the winch , if its abit doggy , then we talk up our procedure and plan ahead to be prepared to drop the pot and run or just run if i see anything that looks like a lifter
however id say im reasonably respectfull of the water down our way and pay attention to it before we go and on arrival , including tides , swell , wind direction and ''surge ''conditions as we beach launch pretty much 90% of the time , and you need to do that each time , and be prepared to just turn around and go home if it looks too wild or dodgy
i can recall occasions we have done that over the last 30 years or so , arrived at the beach , swell was well up , could have gotten out in boat , but sat and observed from onshore then after 20 mins called it as a ''no '' too dodgy and driven back home to do other stuff on the day
on at least two seperate occasions like that when we have come home and not launched to go out iv later heard of boats getting into trouble and a person has died
first time was off peppy beach in may/june of peppy beach , bloke sailed his yacht back from dunsborough with his wife , he was washed overboard and lost i think and she beached the yacht at peppy during the bad weather hours later
second time was off cowaramup bay around 1988, we had a small tinnie back then and 9hp outboard , decided to not go out to check pots and returned home , later that night a news story reported two blokes had their 4 metre odd dinghy upturned or swamped out of south point while checking pots , they tried to cling to the upturned hull till they where rescued only one survived
both times i was so glad i had not given in to peer pressure from other crew to go out ........maybe we might of been ok , but maybe not
at the end of the day its never worth the risk imo

can relate hezzy
having driven and booked a house at cervantes last June was under pressure to head out wide , launched and just before we got into clear water saw this massive breaker 4m. high?? .barreling down where we needed to pass through, needless to say it was not up for discussion and without hestation turned round and back home , made for a waisted w/end but one time i was glad with the decision made .
the sad truth is no one intentionally puts themselves or others in danger by going out in less than ideal conditions , but there are occasions where the elements conspire and that can can lead to disatrous consequences .

Very sad
When pulling pots in any sort of swell in shallow water ie less than 15 metres it only takes less than a minute for a larger than average swell to come through and you can suddenly find yourself in a treacherous situation. In recent times I have given serious thought as to where my expired was mounted and after a bit of thought I moved it to a position that would allow me to get to it if the boat turned over.

Went out with a mate on his 55 foot launch a few years back hoping to find a metro mackie out wide. It was a serious swell so we were very alert for any problems.
His sounder was playing up but the GPS put us in an area around 30 metres deep at the time with nothing on the charts to indicate breaking waves. I was watching a couple of big swells when I realised they were going to break. We hit the juice and were well out of the way but break they did. Not fully but enough to roll a big boat if caught broadside. I've always had respect but that took me by surprise!
