Boat Insurance for vessels over 15 yrs for Glass boats 20 yrs for Ali

Hi fellas , This has probably been asked before but here goes anyway. I recieved my insurance invoice the other day and it tells me i have to get the boat surveyed in order to continue insurance. Question - R there any companies about that don't require a survey for older boats. Am over these money gouging grubs and am thinking of doing away with it altogether,  looking for alternatives.

Valuation report

Tue, 2017-06-13 13:25

When I rang SGIO I was asked for a valuation report because it is an older boat. Doesn't seem like there is a way out of paying for a survey for an older boat.

if it helps I've made a claim through SGIO
Was the easiest thing. took boat to a dealer they gave me a quote. rang SGIO. apparently they sent an assessor who gave the OK straight away ....repairs done and I just paid excess to dealer when I picked up boat.

Just talked about this very subject at Gnaraloo with my mate who has a Chivers Thunderbird. There are insurance  companies that don't require survey and I think he went with RAC. He was with Club marine and they wanted it surveyed every year so he arsed them.

Club Marine only require a letterhead

Thu, 2017-06-15 12:34

I had mine done by our mobile mechanic, just a quick report on his letterhead was good enough for them. They just don't want to be insuring some rotten old POS, that might look ok on paper,  that someone insures knowing they can have it sit in the drive for 6  months then take it on the river and have it "sink" for the insurance.

Club marine

Same as Ranmar850, I am insured with club marine and they just requested a boat condition report from the boat yard, not a survey.

Well there you go , after

Mon, 2017-08-14 14:20

Well there you go , after giving Club Marine a ring and telling them i will be looking at a new insurer when my policy is due re the fact that they wanted boat inspections etc for my just turned 20yr old boat.

I recieved a letter from them saying that , after reviewing there underwriting guidelines for boat inspection and condition reports .As a result we are changing our requirements for when reports need to be provided on a range of risks including yours. this means that they r now able to offer my policy for renewal when it becomes due and do not have to provide a boat inspection and/or condition report.

what is confusing tho is in the next sentence quote - If you already have had a report done , thank you. please email it to blah blah and we will keep it on file for future referance. Each report is valid for 5 years, so we wont ask you for another report for some time.

You will recieve an invtation to renew your policy before it falls due. I wonder if that means they are going to ask me for a report every year going forward ? They originally asked for a Condition Report & 2 Colour Pics. So i have done nothing about a report etc and dont intend to. Will let you know what happens when it becomes due in January.

I have got to say

Tue, 2017-08-15 18:39

I have not had a problem with Club Marine, I had a claim a couple of years back for a damaged gear box fin on my 115 Yamaha, the damage occurred when the contractors at exy moved my boat with a fork lift and dragged the fin along the bitumen They refused to cover the damage and I had to make a claim on my insurance. sent them a couple of photos with claim, they replied very quickly and positively and that was that.
