4000 size spin reel, 30lb
4000 size spin reel, 30lb braid and my choice is a pe 1-3 jig rod. There isn't much in the bay you can't catch with that combo, last trip it wasn't a problem knocking of metre plus trevally.....

Agree with Triggy about the
Agree with Triggy about the PE 1-3 as an all rounder.. Pretty much the only thing I used up there.
BUT.. I imagine you're going a little deeper targeting reds? A smallish overhead combo would be my pick. Good If you want to have a troll too.
Fin-nor marquesa 16 or similar high speed reel loaded with 50lb braid on a shorter rod <6 ft would knock off any other requirements.

For around $500 you'd be able to pick up a 5000 Shimano Stradic (bigger size mainly for the spool capacity) and a 15-30lb Shimano Terez, I'd be putting some 20-30lb Braid on it and that'll serve you well

+1 or the terez
i used the 15-30lb shimano terez matched to an 8000d baitrunner with 30lb last time i was up there, weather was rough so didnt get out deep just shallow pinkies (which it was kinda overkill) but still a great all rounder $600 for the combo and line

reel
i reckon a saragosa SW maybe 6000 - 8000, the gosa's are strong and large line capacity and cheap for the build quality fill it with 30 - 40lb your laughing

Because I have teenage boys
Because I have teenage boys who cant look after things, I recently bought three for our trip to Denham (one for each son) 560 slammer combos, with a Rovex rod with quality guides etc for $130 ea.They did the job on everything we hauled in.
