Boat sinking of Scarborough

2 men were lucky to survive after their boat sank 5nm of Scarborough. I was on rescue duty on Sunday when we got the call and was on site within 15 minutes from Hillarys boat harbour. They let of a flare and it was spotted by another boat. The only mistake they made was not knowing how to use thier radio to put out a mayday. They called their brotherinlaw who called the water police and then the sea rescue. the delay was about 10 minutes. If another boat had not seen the flare it could have been a different story.
Lesson is always logon with your local sea rescue and know how to use the radio.

How did it sink?
Someone told me that the entire aft section with motor had separated from the hull or something, but that info was third hand and totally unconfirmed. Seemed a bit extreme, but I guess anything is possible.

Cause of sinking
we were advised by the skipper that he heared a popping noise form the front of the boat as they were travelling back to Hillarys. He did not hit anyhting so it appears the hull may have split. Must have been bad split because as soon as they stopped boat was taking on water faster than they could bail.

Built in WA
I am sure Baron boats were built in WA. My father had one for a number of years and it was a great for going offshore. Not sure if they are still being built or if someone else has taken over the hull design.
