Electrical Storms

After reading a few posts and comments on today’s weather it reminded me of a question I was going to raise.During a storm has anyone else noticed the buzzing coming from their two way ariels? The first time this happened to me my deckie raised it as I was under the hardtop and never even heard it.  Are there any dangers of increased lightning strikes or is there an increased risk?

problems today with radio

Sun, 2009-05-31 23:05

went out deep today. When it came time to log off with sea search and rescue i couldnt get the channel (88) to change off the emergency channel and there was a loud screaching noise coming through the radio. When i called sea search and rescue on my phone they said they were getting a screaching sound on their emergency channel as well. Will check radio tomorrow it might be buggered but just a bit strange sea search and rescue was having the same problems

Lightening strikes

Tue, 2009-06-02 20:10

If you are unlucky enough to get caught in an electrical storm it pays to turn off your radios including your AM/FM radio. While you are at sea you are the highest point above the water and giving an electrical current ,even in milivolts as a radio does can be enough of a signal for a lightening strike.
Best advice is to bolt for shelter long before the thunder storm gets close enough to do any harm

Are they likely to attract lightning strikes? I have asked myself that a few times when there is an electrical storm approaching.
