Boat sun protection

Recently got turned down by council to build a carport for my boat. Was wondering if a good boat cover will keep the gell coat and boat in general in a good condition. It gets very hot in my front yard and even under the cover the heat is intense. Was wondering what everyone else do with a similar issue?

Sounds like you mightnt have
Sounds like you mightnt have many other options mate, our councel will let us put up small soft top (ie shade cloth) buildings with out a permit but were rural and not many people take note of our councils rules anyway! Might be an idea to approach the shire to see if theres a way you could build something they'll approve? If thats your favord option. As for boat covers havnt had one so carnt realy say id recon be a lot better than nothing and a lot of people have them. They'll knot only keep UV of but keep your boat dry good luck.

Econotarps
My Dad has always used tarp, 18ft boat and now 23ft. The Perspex windows in the 18ft pacemaker lasted 30 years and no one believed him but he had the boat for 30 years and never changed the windows. Bought a 4 yr old boat that was left in the sun and just got it buffed and polished as gel coat was faded and deteriorating. Econotarps white cover and green underside. Have one for my Camper trailer and so cool.

I got turned down because
I got turned down because apparently the carport was in part of my turning circle of my drive way which bull cause we have enough space to turn. Not keen on a big and expensive fight with them so looking at other options. Easier to ask for forgiveness than permission it seems.

silly question. how do you
silly question. how do you work out what size tarp to use. eg. 21 foot boat but then you need to allow to go up over the windscreen and over the motor also.

good question....also wondering
I'm thinking going as big as possible to get the best UV protection with sandbags to anchor the ends, maybe even poles to keep the ends at bow and stern up to try and get some airflow through. I see Econo tarps come in predetermined sizes so for a 5.5m boat I might go the 5.5x6.1 http://www.econotarps.com.au/inc/sdetail/270/316

Tarp
If you want to use a tarp to cover a boat but don't want to spend $$$$ for "custom made", then use Billboard tarp. I have used billboard tarps for years and they work great!
White side faced up to deflect heat.
Theres a lady in Attadale that sells them cheap, $20-$50 depending on size.

Boat cover
just jump on eBay and search " jumbo boat cover " for about $200 you get a great cover for your boat that is very well made and fit exceptionally well.

I picked one up back in May
I picked one up back in May with a mind to getting a custom one done further down the line and so far it's been great. Waterproof and pretty easy to get on and off and it hasn't torn on anything although I cover my bar light and rocket launcher with towels for added protection. I got the Kaiser one.
Only issue is that they put the side access zips too far forward and they line up with my clears and not the deck.

My question and issue I have
My question and issue I have is under even a great boat cover it gets extremely hot in summer which surely cant be good for the boat, fibreglass electronics ect. Hense why I wanted a carport and now looking at options to cover protect from UV but also allow ventilation.....

Uv
i think the heat factor is not so much an issue the uv does the damage, I have had my boats in full sun but under a cover for years and no real issue. Both boats glass.

Hey "Cockroach" and jackfrost
Not many on here will understand the translation kakkerlak!!
But if you have a rocket launcher and the tarp/boatcover gets caught on the rocketlauncher there is a cheap and easy fix to make the tarp/cover slip over it.
All it takes is some PVC retic pipping, PVC glue and some T and elbow fittings.
I have a seven hole launcher. 2 elbows with pipe into the launcher end, and 2 Ts with pipe into the launcher somewhere in the middle. Then join them with bigger PVC pipe to form a frame so that basically you have a structure that fits into the launcher, but the tarp etc wont grip over the metal as you pull the cover over.
Shit this sounds difficult explaining it this way - if needed Ill post a picture.
Had my boat in the open in Karratha for 5 yrs just under a boat cover without any UV damage, and 3 yrs down here under a tree full of possum without the Pee and "kak" causing any issues.
I have a custom canvas cover, but only some small rips after all the years which are easily patched. Cost more to start, but last a shit load longer.

tarps are a cheap but can cause wear marks.
I used to have tarps that were tied down in about 10-15 spots around the boat down to the trailer but still had wear marks on metal and bimini when the wind blew. The tarps don't have a real smooth surface and are like fine grit sandpaper after a few months. I went to a soft cover and never had the issue again.
