Been there, done that....haven't we Wookiee

20km Off Cervantes...survived....after nearly tipping boat over vertically trying to get over top, on random breaking wave. Decided bigger boat required.

That would be a scary sight

Sat, 2016-08-20 19:34

Seeing a wave like that so far out would be a scary sight, and character building as they say.

To me it's a very wise person that listens to his brain and not his heart and decides that no fish is worth continuing on in conditions when life is clearly at risk.

 Waves dont break 17kms out!

If the conditions are that bad that you take enough water over the side/ass from a slop to potentially sink you then you definately shouldn't be there to start with....

There are a couple of spots out of Dongera and south where the waves get very steep as they come up the shelf.

Waves don't break 17 Ks out Hmmmm

I think there are a couple of yacht crews who sailed in the Sydney to Hobart yacht race a few years back who will disagree with that statement.

 I'll rephrase that, Waves

Sun, 2016-08-21 21:38

I'll rephrase that, Waves dont break in "open ocean" unless of course there is a lump that is shallow enough to make it break... There are lumps/bumps & humps, shoals/atolls where of course a wave can come from the depth and break, what happened in the Sydney Hobart isn't caused by a breaking wave.... Take the wind out of it and you loose the affect.

My point is/was they shouldn't have been there to start with.....

Swompa is dead right though if there is a big enough change in the bathymetry then it will lump up but it has to be shallow enough to break ie Cow Bombie out of Gracetown where the biggest waves surfed in the southern hemi takes place most years....

Terry Carrol and David Rhys Jones should come down and surf it one day......

Cow Bombie

Mon, 2016-08-22 05:41

The bottom comes straight up from 100 feet to 24feet and drops off the same on the inside.

There is another bombie straight in line with the track leading up to Guilderton lighthouse that sometimes breaks in a big swell

Mon, 2016-08-22 04:34

There is a section that is known off Exmouth too. Between 100 and 200m of water off tantas. Had close calls twice out there while trolling. First time the swell was quite a bit steeper and just had no back on it. Boat fell straight off the crest sideways.

Second one, same area, swell jacked right up and surged straight into the side of the boat. Hit the side with enough force to crack the gunwale and blow the moulded side pockets out. Filled the boat with water too.

Mon, 2016-08-22 07:13

Question..... Assuming the swell is SW but the wind is NW...... Which way is this "breaking wave" breaking? I'd bet Nic Natanui's left knee the swell DIDN'T break but it was the chop/slop created from the wind that caused you fella's grief.

It is of course accentuated by the swell.

Zero swell it will be slop from the NW wind blowing

Big swell it will still be slop from the NW wind but this time the situation is more serious because the rise and fall of the swell plus the "breaking slop".

Put a strong offshore on it and it will lump up but not break!

Tue, 2016-08-23 07:28

18foot Haines with a 90hp. he reckons he was in 27m of water and the boat went end over end. Who knows I guess its a little hard to believe when you haven't seen it for yourself and I haven't. Seen some big lumps of water go past in that depth but nothing breaking maybe I have just been lucky so far.

Sorry, but no matter how big

Tue, 2016-08-23 21:05

Sorry, but no matter how big the swell, without wind on it the swell wont break until the depth shallows out.

At the end of the day (naturally excepting waves breaking on shoal/reef etc) ONLY wind by itself makes rough seas.
Other stuff such as tide, current and swell contribute but NONE of those conditions alone make it rough without wind other than if the sea bottom/hydrography (shallow or narrow passage etc).

A rule of thumb is that 1 knot of tide against wind is equivalent to 10 knots breeze, so 1 knot against 10 knots is like 20knots of wind.

Hence why a nor easter is so shit coming home from the islands...

Nicely put Rob, I'm having a hard time swallowing this as waves don't just come out of anywhere in 27m unless near shallow ground as mentioned. Even with a major chop you aren't going to get rollers.

"Rogue wave"

Wed, 2016-08-24 07:49

Insurance companies swallow it every time...hook, line, and sinker.

What they DON'T swallow is: Being too close to breaking reef. Too much horsepower for boat. Going out in predicted poor conditions. Hooning around in metre-high wind chop. Trying to retrieve stuck anchor with ass-end of boat.

Yep, "Rogue Wave". Your safety word when you f#*k up.
