Boat transport

I’m just about to pull the trigger on getting a larger vessel ( 28 ft Bruce Harris shark cat ) and I need to get it up to Carnarvon. I’ve thought of steaming it up here and decided that it’s a little too adventurous for me . The only other option is to stick her on the back of a low loader ( Flybridge necessitates this ) to get her up here. Any recommendations on transport companies ? . I’m also needing to find out who does boat lifting in Mandurah. Thanks in advance.

Where's your sense of adventure?

Probably just over 400 nm from Mandurah. What engines?  Fuel capacity? Old 2 strokes, put it on a truck . Cost the same for fuel. Modern fourstrokes, maybe get 1 nm per litre if you don't push the throttles too far forward.  So about 450 litres, cost $700. Truck will set your back several thousand, at least, plus the cost of lifting each end. You'll need to plan for fuel stops, and pump petrol can be hard to come by at jetties up here. That would be the hardest part, IMO. Fill'er up and put a couple of 44's on it.  Other than that, go for it. 100 nm per day should be easy, weather dependent. Just make sure you have enough fuel for the final leg from Kalbarri to at least Denham. Have a fish on the last day. Swag it in anchorages. What a trip.

That’s right

Yep twin 175 Verados with 700 litres of fuel . It will cruise at 20 kts burning a litre per donk per nm. This gives a ( theoretical ) range of 350 nm . Banking on 300 mile to a set of tanks it definitely got the legs to cover some serious distances . Only problem is getting juice outside of the metro area. Baileys fuel supplies only deal in diesel and I can’t really see myself doing trips in a taxi to get fuel in Jurien Bay , Gero and Kalbarri . Another factor is I’ve never run a cat before and I’d like to eaaaase myself into seeing how she behaves in different weather and sea conditions. A 500 Nm shakedown is not really my cup of tea at this point in my life. Yes freight will not be cheap but will give me a greater chance of having a boat in one piece when it gets here !

Wise decision

For a first time run a bit of caution goes a long way, would it be a good run with some experience with the boat behind you certainly would.

Truck it up there. You don't want stuff going wrong on some remote part of the coast along the way.

If it is over width, the trucking costs could be pretty hefty

Only spec I can find lists it as 10 foot which is over 3 meters.

This I think requires at least one pilot vehicle

A smidge under three metres wide .

Mon, 2019-08-12 18:49

2.9 metres wide , juuust scrape in on the width . The height can be no taller than 4.5 m from the road to top of load. Trailer deck is 800 mm add another 100 mm for the cradle and that leaves me with 3600 mm to play with . Looks like it’s going to come in a shade under 5k  . Not too bad overall , cheaper than buying a trailer and truck to cart it myself !
