Boat/Trailer Latches
Submitted by mako magic on Sat, 2010-01-09 18:05
Been toying with the options of getting one of those latches that makes it easier for single handed launch and retrieve.
most times i go out its not too hard though find its getting a bit of a pain climbing thru the screen to secure the boat then go back to turn the engine off and lift it up then get back out the boat and drive the car away,
i know theres a few brands and styles out there so what would people recommend.
also remembering my boat is 6.7m

the old way then
Yeah then we have to revert the old way which in my case aint that bad I have a power winch which pulls the boat on the trailer in about 15 seconds.

I can not see how it would
I can not see how it would work all the time as when i drive my boat on it never goes in the same spot to latch on
sometimes i put my trailer in the water a littile deeper so wouldnt you need to get it spot on everytime ?

Hi Mighty Mouse. Just a quick comment to your boat drive on.
If your trailer is in the water too far you will have trouble loading or unloading your boat because it is not supported by the rollers or skids. If the rollers are not set up properly ( 9 out of 10 are not ) the boat is trying to climb up rollers on one side only to fall down on the other side, so it is trying to go up the trailer zig zag. Wich post nuts are screwed down unevenly. Look from the tow bar down the centreline of the trailer and make sure they line up. Most of this is on our web site
www.boatlatch.com Hope this is some help . Geoff.

MM's boat has a trailer with
MM's boat has a trailer with bunks, not rollers, as many of the american boats makers prefer.
I know with Alfred's boat which is a 19' US boat and on a bunked trailer can be a little freaky going onto the trailer, but usually lines up fine by the time its at the post.
Roller trailers really suffer if you put them too far into the water, its best to usually have the end rollers only a little into the water, of they can't help line up the hull.
Bigger boats and bunks, it seems the more they're in the water the better, but my exp stops at 19'.

Perhaps it doesn't work so
Perhaps it doesn't work so well with trailers with bunks instead of centering rollers?

Had one on my old boat and they are the best. Makes life so easy
I had on on my previous boat. They are a god send. Makes life so much easier. For launching and retrieval. Only reason haven't gotten one on new boat is that I haven't fitted it yet.

yeah I can vouch for boat
yeah I can vouch for boat latch. Had one on a 6m half cab and also used them on other peoples boats. If you're a "drive on/off" type of guy they save heaps of time and hassle.
