Bottom Bashing outfit for Exmouth - recommendations?

While the TLD25 has served me well, I want to step up a notch in class and get myself an outfit for Exmouth next year. I have a rough idea of what I will get, but I'm interested to see what other people would recommend. This is for bottom fishing only, no jigging or trolling etc.

I guess the only stipulations are: fishing 30 - 120m, I've been told to run 80lb braid (and I want 300m+ on the reel), OH set-up and nothing weighing 13kg. Budget is basically open chequebook (thanks for the contracts Woodside LOL) but I dont want to spend $3000 for the sake of spending $3000 if that makes sense.

Recommend away......

Hi

Thu, 2008-11-27 19:06

I bought a shimano tekota 700 last year and i fish 50lb on it.
Also have a daiwa sealine sld 30 which i fish 80lb on.
Both work well in exy. I use the tekota till about 60m and then use the sealine in deeper water.
Sealine is matched with a shimano tyrnos heavy rod and tekota matched with an older 15kilo penn rod. Daiwa combo set me back around $520.
cant remember price for other combo.

Fishing isn't a matter of life or death, it's much more serious than that!!!

Thu, 2008-11-27 19:06

Saltiga 40 or 40Z with a tcurve 200 has served me well up north. I used to use 80 but have dropped back to 50lb tuffline. I use it for trolling us well and it has held up pretty well given the abuse it gets. PUlled a 50lb cod up on it using thumblock as drag and it all held together fine. NOt the dearest outfit but not cheap either.

Other one I would consider and used last time was a stella 20,000 and a jig rod. I found that this was very good if the sharks were around and you need to get fish up fast. No overhead puts out that sort of drag in as fishable a combo.

The bottom bouncing setup

Thu, 2008-11-27 19:15

The bottom bouncing setup for 80lb i use is awsome. Saltiga 40 estimated 300m of 60lb but you would get that on with 80lb. 10kg drag pressure and heaps of cranking power. however id recomend the saltiga 50......plenty of line capacity for 80lb braid, 13kg plus drag, awsome reel. Even better than this again since ive had a look around for performance wise and ease of cranking power is the penn vsx16. Heard nothing but good remarks from all who own them. For 80lb braid you do need a rod that can take the drag as well if you want to run the line to its full strength.

Custom seed or hastings IMO is the way to go but off the shelf stuff try the saltiga deep 55b. Its only rated for pe6 but can handle more than 20kg drag loaded up at 30 degree angle so 80lb will be sweet through it. Ive got one and love it. Tcurve trynos heavy arnt bad but there not that flash either. The new XZOGA (site sponsor) overhead pe8 jig rod is nice as well with plenty of grunt....getting me one soon.

The list can go on and on but theres a few to have a look at.

had mine on a saltiga 55deep originally, now it resides with Blake T, you will not break it but you may struggle to actually load it up properly, a 50 would be a better bet on it with the extra drag!

As I have read/heard that a high speed ratio isn't that great for bottom bashing? Can anyone enlighten me? I was told to try and stick to a 4:1 ratio....

And Spess, if I am going to look in that price range, am I better off just getting a Penn 16VSX and be done with it?

The lower speed will help

Thu, 2008-11-27 20:36

The lower speed will help you winch up the heavy sinkers a lot easier (i.e. more cranking power).

When I went up north last, I ran a saltiga 30 and a van staal rod. Ran 50lb and went for the 30 as the 40 doesnt have any more drag but lighter, and still held 300m no problems. The rod is quite parabolic and bends all the way through the blank incl the grips. Depends on your fishing style depends how you want it to bend, but it worked well for me as you can just hold it all day without it applying as much pressure to your arm. Several other rods will have similar actions (the xzogas i think are a bit like that).

Thu, 2008-11-27 20:17

Mate i hate penn in my opinion there shit but that reel(16vsx) must be made from somone else and penn labelled it.lol. They are nothing but awsome. Ask Makomagic, Brenz or Tim what they think of theres. for just under $1000 i think thats what id be using but then again it is a bit big which is the only down side. One thing i do know though if you do get one and put 600m of 80lb on it there is nothing around that your not going to stop!. Within reason:) I cant remember what it was about the accurates that i didnt like but it was something to do with a fault or something that happens with them.

Ive got a few salitgas and love them but i cant wait to get a penn 16vsx for straight up fun.

I have a saltist and I love

Thu, 2008-11-27 20:24

I have a saltist and I love it, but its seriously pushed at 50lb. You just can't get enough drag out of them, probably even with after market washers, to bother fishing 80lb. I don't think the saltigas offer any more drag, but I've never used one.

What can a torsa dish out?

Accurate make some serious claims for drag, and they come in two speed, I'd look at it myself!

Till go get your self a set

Thu, 2008-11-27 20:32

Till go get your self a set of carbontex drag washers from over east. Jack Erskines the brand and man who makes them. Run then dry or very lightly lubed and you get over 10kgs of drag pressure out of the saltist 30. Dont want much more than that in an overhead. Ive got two now fully upgraded and they go hard.

Hmm I thought the guideline

Thu, 2008-11-27 21:20

Hmm I thought the guideline was 1/3 of line weight as drag? In that case, you would want 27lb as drag.

Isn't the stock drag supposed to pull about 22lb? I haven't benched mine yet, but will report back when I do!

I put carbontex into my curado and that really beefed up the herbs, I probably got another couple kg out of it in that.

Accurate

Thu, 2008-11-27 20:25

Love the accurate except for one problem. When you back off the spool tension it stops the drag lever from engaging or atleast makes it hard and you have to crunch it to get it to move.

That the problem you were thinking of Spess.

16VSX is a great reel. Only downfall is the size. They are quite big and heavy thats why mine is only used out past 200m.

fight fight fight

Spess, I have played with the VSX - the weight was probably the only issue. Having said that, it would probably back up pretty well as a trolling reel for beakies with a decent shock leader attached. Although probably not needed for this Exmouth trip, subsequent trips it may prove more than useful on the troll out of my own boat.

So bloody hard - you think it'd be easy!

Huggy....do you really want to get into the Blingage?? or you just want a BB outfit??

Torsa....speed and power....can fish 80lb....want line capacity?? Go Whiplash or exxy Jap PE high powered braid. I got PE6 rated to 87lb on my Saltiga Exp atm.

Rods....well plenty to choose from. Whats wrong with the Braid Buster?? Light and strong enough. Otherwise can go a JigWrex....just stiffer than your BB.

you just don't need 80lb.

Fri, 2008-11-28 07:05

you just don't need 80lb. think about it - the deepest you will fish up north is probably 100m. With lighter braid you need less sinker = more natural bait presentation = better chance at bigger fish. If you can snap 50lb tuffline or pe5 ygk etc then you need to get your thumb off the reel and let the drag do its job. PE8 is overkill for anything up there or down here. I have 30lb fins on my saltiga 30 and have only ever snapped stuff at the leader knot with it both metro and up north.

Save the pe8 for sambos and GT's.

I've used the torque300 and the torsa 30 in the 100m mark up there and will go the torsa everytime now.
The torque has the quicker retrieve on paper, but if you throw on a big chunk of lead and a nice size red you will struggle to get it past the sharks. The torsa is geared to do all the work for you. I only wished they made them in a star drag.

Yup, need to go from freespool to fully locked up in a heartbeat. or you'll get done either by the fish or by the nohas. Have'nt yet seen a rod and reel that could outdo a 200pd handline and a 1dollar glove

Just get a sharper ramp on

Just get a sharper ramp on the cam, thats what its for.

Star drag just sucks because you really have no idea where its set when you have to turn it through 540 degrees to adjust between 0 and 100% drag, which may exceed what is suitable for your line.

My toy avet is set to deliver 5kg and I only have to move the lever though about 60 degrees to go between 0 and maximum. Nothing you could do faster with astar drag there.

There really aren't many good or popular lever drag castables, if that was sorted, I don't know why anyone would even bother with star drag.

Have their place

Sat, 2008-11-29 18:31

Star drags have their place Till. If your using the reel properly you have the drag set to the right level and IMO you should never adjust the drag during the fight anyway. If you do need to to stop something a well jammed thumb will do the job (similar to palming the spool on a threadline), if that doesn't stop it then a lever pushed to sunset probably wouldn't either.

I entirely agree John, but

I entirely agree John, but mostly because of the very practical aspect that you can get a rock solid reel like the saltist for very little money.

I don't leave my drags under pressure when I'm not fishing, but I know that my lever drags are set to whatever I left them at when I push them back to full. I have to put a scale onto a star drag because its like 9-10 turns to set it, its just a bit more guesswork.

Oh I have seen a few fingers pushed a little far into a saltist, its nearly been mine once or twice too =0

Feel

Sat, 2008-11-29 18:45

That's true but I'll usually re-check my reels (lever drags included) when I begin fishing anyway.

Mind you I don't bother with scales, just do it by feel. Probably not recommended by the game boys but it works for me.

same john, the only reels i do by scales are my game reels, all other gear is just done by feel each time when used, dont see the need to pre set star drags anyway, some people do though

I've matched my overhead

Sat, 2008-11-29 21:26

I've matched my overhead reels to the drag rating. Fully cranked is a bit over 40%. I usually fish a tad under, then fully crank only if I think it will be a long fight. Dont have to worry at all cranking it up too hard though. Lighter reels than any lever drags i've seen, plus it seems a lot easier flicking a switch to disengage and reengage the drag.

If you chuck 30lb, or even 20lb on your avet, full drag is still going to be fine doesnt matter how you crank your drag.
