broadband sounder - what depth
Submitted by Paul N on Wed, 2009-07-15 14:06
A question for anyone using hd broadband sounders. I would like to know what depth these sounders read to. My lowrance 107df drops out at about 170mtrs and the screen goes multicolour. I know this is normal but would like to be able to pick up bait balls etc when troling the deep waters off places like Exmouth. All the hype on these sounders shows pictures of the bottom in extreame depths. Is this factual or is it only on top end units?
What unit do you use ,what depth can you hold or what would you suggest for deep water.
Thanks
Paul

I have a new HDS-7 on it's
I have a new HDS-7 on it's way for my new boat and i have been told for the deeper waters i'll require the 50/200khz transducer instead of the standard 83/200khz model so perhaps a change in the transducer will help you get the depth you need

i would have thought it was
i would have thought it was more to do with the power of the unit rather than the tranny set up. ( i realise the 50 v 200 does make a difference, but you wont read deep if you havent got power!)

Me Too
Was thinking the same thing. Doesn't broadband give you something like 10 times the power. That would indicate 10 times the depth reading , but maybee that's not so. This is what I am trying to find out but depends on the sales staff you talk to as to the depth these units will go .

Thanks Andy
I did see that post. It was one of the things that got me thinking about broadband along with your posts. Have you had yours in the deep water Andy?

Nah not me
I fish up to about 50m usually. Will give it a crack though one day.
