well,im sure there not
mate i dont think any whalers are protected from my research and i work on a deep sea charter boat and we always keep em, but i think they do have a maximum size limmit then you have to throw them back if there over 1.5 or sumthin,

There is a maxium size
There is a maxium size limit but that fish would be ok. It's 700mm maxium from the front dorsol fin to the outside of the rear dorsal. They reckon the shark has to be 1.8m approx long for this to occur so yours mate is perfectly legal. Ripper catch buddy

Bigger than 700mm they
Bigger than 700mm they reckon the amonia levels are too high, thats why you have to release them.

And I think they concentrate
Mercury and other heavy metals in their system that is toxic for us to munch on.

Thanks fellas
wasn't sure, read somewhere a lot of sharks are protected, so the bronzie has to be bigger than 700mm just in case I catch one, caught a 1.5m tiger and released it beautiful strips on them.

While we are on the subject, does anyone have any concrete information on weather killing / cleaning sharks in a certian way drains or removes most of the metals and mercury?

you only need to cut the
you only need to cut the gills and tail to bleed and gut asap. the brown line along the spine has to be removed as well as thats where the amonia is from what i have been told and researched. no need to cut the fins off. the fins make great soup from what i have heard but never tried it

I've always removed the head
I've always removed the head and fins off the shark when caught straight away, helps to keep the amonia taste down in it, always have done. never had bad tasting shark.

Head and fins
Just cutting the head and fins off doesn't do anything as far as stopping the ammonia getting into the flesh. Best way to bleed is cut the head and tail off asap then clean it straight away, don't leave it till later. Remove the brown strip along its spine and get water to flush through the passage from the tail back through to the gut cavity along the spine as ant blood/crap will taint the flesh very quickly.
With the fins, now the pros even leave the fins on gummies for extra weight because it is worth more than cutting them off for sale as fins. Cutting them off first removes the handles that make them easier to carry and that is all.

Mate I got a Bronzie whilst baiting Sambo's at the gemini 2 weeks ago. It was about 1.2m and was deep fried that night. AMAZING fresh taste! I'm more than happy to hook another one.
