Broome New Boating Facility on hold 'Heritage Issues'

The Broome Boating Alliance (BBA) and the Broome Community generally are frustrated with a
lack of progress in providing the planned safe boating facilities for the town.

The risks to life and property during cyclone sqxon for mariners and boat owners cannot be
understated. This has been long recognised by the WA Government who have set aside funding for
this necessary piece of infrastructure. Protracted negotiations with the various user groups has
brought about lengthy and unacceptable delays in progressing this facility. The BBA now calls upon
other lobby groups and the Yawuru people to expedite the heritage clearances in good faith
providing the way forward to a safer boating environment for all local people and visitors to Broome.

The development and improvement to Broome's Boating facilities will have significant positive
impacts for the Broome community. The whole community will benefit from this development with
some positive outcomes being;

Improved environmental outcomes and controls by providing appropriate maintenance and
wash down facilities;

Boost the economy of Broome by allowing vessels to be serviced locally;

Give Broome's community much needed safer launch, retrieval and storage facilities;

Enhance employment oportunities in the regional marine service industries;

Improved response time for our very important Sea Rescue Group; and,

Serve as a safe vessel storage area during cyclone season.

Like all boat owners in Broome, we have serious concerns about the time taken to sign off on the
identified heritage clearances. Lengthy delays in heritage clearance mean continued exposure of
mariners to risk of personal harm and damage to vessels and equipment. Delays will also result in
significant additional costs for the development of Broome's safe boat harbour. Any delays will
result in a reduction of available funds for the projects completion. This will have a significant
impact on the overall quality and useability of the facility.

In the last 17 months the projects development has been delayed by lack of commitment by some
stakeholders. We are now rapidly aproaching the cyclone season and call upon all stakeholders to
give their blessing to this necessary project and help expedite the required heritage clearances.

The Broome Community have the right to a safe boating facility and the BBA calls upon the
goodwill of those responsible to take positive action to allow project commencement.

The Broome Boating Alliance (BBA) represents the majority of boat users in the Broome areq
lobbying for local and visiting users alike. BBA has been instrumental in negotiations for the
allocation last year of $35 Million State Govemment funding into Broome for improved boating
facilities. We fully support the recognition and preservation of heritage values \Mithin the region.

No chance now of getting anything done this year, looks like they gotta wait another year before anything happens. Must be so bloody frustrating for the poor buggers.

Maybe the govt need to threaten to step in and say this is where its going, sign on the line or else like they did with the gas hub. Seemed to work there .

Total f@$king joke the facilities up here and no one in the government seems to have the balls to step in and get it sorted. Myself and a lot of others are totally fed up with the process up here where one group has total control over where and if this facility goes ahead. Time to step in Mr Barnet, you seem to have been able to for a gas hub that the majoriry of people don't want, how about sorting this for all people of Broome and it's visitors?
