Gedday all
Went out for a run today and after 45 mins flat out we stopped the boat and got off on the beach. After about 40 mins as we went to start again the boat would not crank.
I have some electrical knowledge and have confirmed that there is definately power getting to the first plug on the motor. This proves that the neutral switch and key switch are working. But from there the wiring goes crazy. Has anyone had the same or may know what may be wrong??
The motor is a 2007 50HP Johnson 4 stroke
Thanks

Could be a lot of things,
Could be a lot of things, but one oddball one I struck once on a 90Hp yamaha wasn't any sort of wiring fault. Turn the key, everything would dim, would not crank. Battery excellent. Took the plastic cover off the flywheel, and found the starter pinion gear jammed on a flywheel tooth. There were three worn patches on the flywheel ( 3-cylinder motor, naturally), and the pinion had jammed just off a tooth. Popped it off with a screwdriver, problem solved. Never recurred, although flywheel has since been replaced.
Oh, and another one--your ingear start protection switch in the control box will do it, too--everything will appear to be normal, just won't crank, if switch breaks and goes open circuit ( or loses connection somehow). This has happened to me also.

just my 2 cents worth (and
just my 2 cents worth (and not related to the problem but more to longevity) no outboard should be run for 45mins flat out....

Has it started again since it
Has it started again since it has cooled down?
I used to have an old Johnson 50 that suffered from vapour lock at times where it would run fine all morning but once you stopped and then went to start again, the bloody thing would not start. I found that some servos have a higher ethanol content in the fuel and this boils in the fuel line near the motor creating bubbles and pressure preventing fuel from getting to the motor.

Thanks fellas for the feedback.
The motor doesnot crank over at all. Never thought to look at the pinion being jammed on the flywheel and that makes sense it could be possible. And I agree with you palegicyachts definately overloaded the poor thing and as a result I think that I may have damaged a sensor on the engine...maybe, hopefully.

Got the boat back after two
Got the boat back after two weeks at the doctors. Long story so I wont bore you, but for info the problem with my outboard was the neutral switch. Not the one in the forward controls but the one on the engine that acts as a rev limiter. Didnt know they had one, but there you go. Had a look for the switch to know for next time just incase next time is 20kms out. Its not obvious and the Johnson dealer in Mandurah toild me its not an easy one to change out!! But if your boat has one then maybe you could try to find it incase you need to bridge it to get you going if it fails.
