Bunker Bay - South-west
Submitted by Rako on Wed, 2010-12-15 10:16
Hi all,
Spending some time at Bunker Bay Resort over the new year, looking at putting a line in the water.
Curious if anyone has any knowledge regarding where to fish and whether a beach rod is a neccesity?
Are there any bread and butter species i can tackle with my 7foot ugly..?
Cheers,
Rako

sand whiting out the front
Plenty of sand whiting directly out the front of the bunker bay resort on the beach.
I fished basically directly in front of the beach front cafe that does great breakfast there and caught about 12 whiting in 1.5hrs.
There will also be plenty of Herring and maybe a lonely skippy around or 2 (plenty of rocky area's nearby) but the skippy will be small
sandy bottom there so light star sinkers and small hooks with some fresh squid tentacle or shelled prawn for bait would be the go.
best of luck

If the swell isn't doing much
If the swell isn't doing much I reckon a 7-fter should be okay. Should be able to get your bread and butter species like herring and skippy there, maybe some tailor.
I fished there a few months ago and found the back half of the beach had more fishy looking water, it was a bit more stirred up and the gutters were better. I know that stuff can change but I reckon the shape of the bay probably leans to that being the way things are there - that end of the bay is more exposed.
Given it will be the Chrissy holidays it's probably worth the walk anyway to get away a bit from the hoards.

Go to Rocky point, basically
Go to Rocky point, basically walk onto the beach and turn right. As you get near the end of the beach, where Ben says, there is rocks you can fish off.
Plenty of reef structure there and a 7ftr perfect, walk around the rocks untill you are facing N/E, a little berley and should get good herring and smallish skippy, salmon trout. Be careful on the rocks though can get slippery if the swell is up.
Good luck

Was down there 2 months ago
Was down there 2 months ago and the swell was too big for my 7footer, you should get something there, if you've got a 9 footer, perfect. i always fish quindalup bay, (dunsborough town centre) never any waves, like a lake, no people so relaxing with a coldie, love that place, last time we had plenty of herring, whiting, small kg whiting, gurnard i think it look like a huge blowie? couple of flatties, tarwhine all brilliant fun on my 7ft graphite i always use a running bean sinker rig on light gear on the bottom.... enjoy yourself, maybe just bearley up a bit, brings them in for sure.

Well over summer
unless there's a strong wind from the E/NE round to a NW Geo bay will be a lake. You need a swell over 2.5-3m to even get 1ft waves at bunkers. You will pickup Whiting and a few Herring right out the front of the resort but as Man Overboard said take the walk down to the far end of Bunkers towards Rocky Point and fish there. Always a chance of good Skippy and Tailor if you fish the right times (dawn/dusk).

Hospital
If you walk around to the right [Rocky Point] end of the beach to where the rocks start. The reef in front is known as "the Hospital" it usually turns up herring, salmon trout and skippy saving you the walk right to the main rock.
The main rock has all the above plus millions of little buffs and reef fish that strip your bait in seconds.
If the swell is right down it can be one of the very few rocks on our coast that I feel safe to fish at night when all the pickers have gone. You can get a balloon out easily for a chance of a tuna, mulloway or shark.
