Burrup Penisular - "jump-up" 4WD question
Submitted by Iceman on Thu, 2013-06-13 08:59
Heading to Karratha in a couple of weeks and will be looking to go out to the Peninsular for some LB fishing in some of the bays and see the sights.
Have read about a spot called the "Jump-Up" which is a steep incline on one of the tracks in. Just looking for any information such as difficulty etc. Any Photos would be handy and is there a way around it.
I have 150 series Toyota Prado.
Only there for a couple of days.

I have not been over it for a few years, but was listening to a guy at work this morning complaining that his suspension was buggered last week from the jump up.
There is a back track to go around it, but I heard it is quite chewed up and almost as difficult as the jump up.

dont do it if you have sidesteps
theres a rock at the top that eats sidesteps but if your cautious you can get up there easy ,down is harder as you have to pick your line
There are two types of people ,do'ers and watchers
Right now the do'ers are the doing it
And the watchers are watching us do it

the jump up
it is a formidable challenge if you don't wont to loose your side steps or get a scratch on your 4 be 4 don't try it if your prepared to accept that thou you will be rewarded with a pristine beach on the other side going back down is as big a challenge as going up ( check the amount of side steps mud flaps ext chucked over the side of the jump up there was a clip of me coming down the jump up on u tube ( not posted on there by me) but it seems to be lost now. 150 series prado you will make it up there but get the family out of it and use them as spotters on the way up and down and be prepared to move lots of rocks by hand

KEEP LEFT!!!get right up on
KEEP LEFT!!!
get right up on the left hand side on the way up to avoid the dreaded side step eater then opposite on the way down. it's not a steep hill, it's not a big hill it's just a bloody good challenge that my 200 series will be going no where near :) also time your travel for the lower half of the tide otherwise on a spring tide you may be driving through salt water before you hit the jump up.

That thing plain scared me
Before we had a boat up here in Karratha we were landbased. So you can imagine that the Burrup looked very inviting. The first time I saw it was with the neighbour in his work Effie (F250). That was way to big to go over it and he was just showing us how to get there. I had a look from inside the car then and thought its not that steep, but didnt get out because he was showing us the sites.
When I took the old Prado up there (and it had some scratches already) I walked it, and thought bugger this after watching some people tackle it.
Im a retired Rally competitor, but have limited true 4x4 experience other than fairly flat sand beaches (dont like dunes either) and I thought that might be just a tad to risky for me without damaging suspension, side plates etc.
I would certainly think a little 4x4 like a Suzi or Jeep would be the easiest because of that monster at the top.
Just a chicken
and as Brucesta said - No way in the world is my 200S going near it ever.
I didnt know there is a back road into there. Can someone fill me in.

Some of my workmates have
Some of my workmates have gone the "back way", it is still quite rough. I looked on Google maps and there appears to be a track going around the jump up

Thanks
Thanks for all the feedback and videos. Only had the Prado 1 month so little 4wd experiece with it. Had a 98 Patrol before and the Prado is very different to drive
Might have a look at it but give it a miss. War office would kill me if I scratch/damages the car on our first trip.

There are some nice beaches
There are some nice beaches at the Eastern end of Cleaverville which only require a little bit of 4WD

Back track
If you think the jump up is bad then you really don't want to go anywhere near the track that goes around it over the hill. It's brutal and not for beginners unless your car is a pile of shit or you just don't care about it. Have not seen it for a few years now but can't see it improving. Just go the jump up but be carefully and like others have said be ready to place some rocks. The rewards on the other side make it worthwhile.
This habit is getting expensive!

jump up
I made it up in my auto nissan patrol a few times with no damage but I did scrap the sump protector some what and I went dead slow I took a mate out there a while back he was in a cruiser he got a bit of steam up on the approach and bounced his way up easy I think the way to get up it best now is to attack it with a bit of speed rather than dead slow like I have done it in the past
