Man missing off rocks at Quobba
Submitted by carnarvonite on Wed, 2013-06-12 15:28
A man is missing after falling from rocks north of the Blowholes.
Not sure on exactly where he went in at the moment because I'm down in Gero at the moment and communications are scratchy, but from what I can gather its south of Cuvier.
The 2 tugs and line boat from Rio Tintos Cuvier operations raised the alarm as they were travelling up to the cape and one of our rescue vessels was sent as soon as we found out.
Both our boats will be on the scene around first light tomorrow morning to continue the search.

With the rescue boat from Carnarvon how long does it take the rescue boys to get up to blowholes/Quabba/Cuvier. Must be some hike for you ladds covering that vast area.
And lets all hope he is OK.

Good weather
In good weather we can reach the Blowholes in about 40 - 50 minutes but sadly these things don't usually happen in good weather.
One of our future hopes is to have a jetski stationed at our shack at the Blowholes for use in cases like this. First we have to replace the shack otherwise the jetski would disappear as soon as we put it there

hate hearing
I hate hearing that some one has gone in of the rocks good luck with the search cssr hope it is works out well, you blokes do good work and carnarvonite a jet ski based there is a great idea and as for a new shack for you blokes this is the stuff royalty's for regions should be funding instead of locals having to run cake stalls and having to beg of local businesses' I bet the feds haven't sent a boat to look for this poor bugger that went in on the other hand if he was on a boat from Indonesia they would have and to all f/w members sorry about the rant but just makes me so mad

It's not a federal issue
It's not a federal issue Ptermac but a state government one. I don't like the guys chances I'm sad to say. The swells into those rock ledges would be like getting sucked into a vacuum. Very bad news.

what i mean
Sea-Kem what I am trying to say is if it was a boat that had asylum seekers that were now in the water the navy would be all over the place looking for them but just because this poor guy is probably just a aussie citizen they wont expend the same resources as they would otherwise and I have experienced this first hand myself

Heard he was a tourist
So probably wasnt prepared like Marc Russo above. If I was to fish cliffs again in my life I would certainly look like Marc with a PFD etc. Just not worth it.
Media say he probably drowned, but hopes not lost. Good luck Carnarvon Vol Sea Rescue.
And the idea off a jetski up there is fantastic. Why not apply for funding and I would support the cause. One life saved would be enough.

Yep pfd in locations even
Yep this is camp rock Quobba in my avatar
Yep pfd in these locations even when its calm . Its no fashion contest and when they are on they are very comfortable. If you dont wear one for yourself at least do it for you freinds who may have to risk there lives to save you and most of all do it for your family.

Signs everywhere
I find it amazing that people still take such risks. When we go up we always spend time looking a spot to see what the conditions are like before we start fishing. No matter how much safety gear is available you just can't teach people common sense.
There are so many signs reminding you of the dangers.
My thoughts are with the family at this time.

Bottom ledge
Low tide, low swell and down on the bottom ledge just waiting for a wave to wash them in.
I was down in Gero when I got the call from the tugs, notified the police and got the ball rolling with the new , fast boat under way within 20 minutes. They returned after dark , not sure on how many miles they covered but used something like 500 litres of fuel.
Yesterday 2 boats all day and we will be out again this morning with both boats again but sadly looking for a body

Search
The 2 Rio tugs and line boat searched for 3 hours before leaving the scene and will do a run down through the area today as they return from Cape Cuvier now that the ship has been loaded and sailed. Rio Tinto salt at Cuvier has always been ready to allow workers to leave at the drop of a hat in an emergency and for training courses. They donated $23.000 for our second air berth and help support all the service and sporting organisations around town. I cannot speak highly enough of their efforts

Suspended
The search has been suspended for us today because of poor visibility due to heavy rain but the Rio Tinto tugs will do a pass of the area as they return from Cape Cuvier during the day.
We expect to be up there tomorrow and Sunday weather permitting
