The Busso Jetty report 18-6-13
Submitted by TheJettyRat on Tue, 2013-06-18 23:44
Just a breif report. The squid are quite thick on the jetty at the moment, no probs bagging out if you balloon some baits. Mulloway have slowed down a bit, we need another good blow to stir them up. Some thumping good tailor are around on the good nights with sizes getting into the 50's. Herring have also been quite large some up around 30cm. Plenty of bait fish out past the bend, a heap of slimy macks out deeper. Several Pink Snapper have been landed in the past month at the end averaging about 5-6 kg but they are not thick and not a usual catch. Crabs are yet to turn up in good numbers.

They are hitting any colour
They are hitting any colour really , doesn't matter under the lights so much. Get a jig that is lumo and you van't go wrong.I have been catching my tailor on snook fillets, they love em, the best bait for them on the jetty.

Pinkies are usually caught
Pinkies are usually caught where there is broken ground along the jetty. I sounded out 3 or 4 spots once within casting range off the jetty and have caught heaps of pinkies from these spots and from the jetty also.
cheers

Snapper
Nice report jetty rat
Would love to catch my first snapper , when you say ballon for squid is that just rigging a squid jig under a ballooning and leave it to bob around

I put a bait out on a 8/0
I put a bait out on a 8/0 hook and wait for it to move or bob around then pull it and drop the jig down then pull the bait out of the water. Quite often you will get several squid following so you can get the whole bunch that way. I don't use pencil jigs I find the baits dont stay on them well enough and if you use a hook it can be handy if a decent fish grabs it.

Hi
I have never fished Busso Jetty (one of my list of things to do). A dumb question, how someone can pull up the bigger fish? Do people use heavier lines only or very long gaffs?
Cheers

Those jigs should work quite
Those jigs should work quite well they reflect u.v light so they stick out like a sore thumb to the squid since that is the light spectrum in which they see. I have a yo-zuri that does the same thing I also have one that glows solid green ( green reflecting most u.v light ), they both work very well.

wild dirty & black (water)
went for a look at the Busso jetty this morning, I said 'look' cause the water was absolutely filthy
Water was very rough, extremely high tide and the water was filthy and I mean it was close to black in color

The mid-winter slow down has
The mid-winter slow down has started after that last blow, not much around all week, no tailor not many herring and the Mulloway have become far and few between. Plenty of trumps though, millions of them have moved into the dead weed that is floating around on the bottom. Things should start picking up in August sometime.

yep a whole neet will do it,
yep a whole neet will do it, your best bet is when the wind is blowing directly from the west or east so you can get your baloon way way out there the further you can get it out away from the jetty the better. The shark action has been very slow since it has cooled down, the warmer months are the way to go.

Aug for the last run of
Aug for the last run of Mulloway oct/nov for everything else. Would have walked past you lastnight then, I went to the end and fished from 6pm till 1am, caught 6 squid even though I wasn't targeting them and 1 snook for the whole night. Squid were a decent size. Trumperters were everwhere never seen so many and especially for this time of year.

Were a fair few squid about tonight again couldn't get the live bait out for Mulla's on the OH without it getting taken by one, was a good session. There were also a few tailor floating around but they were a bit thin, you have to work for them at the mo, lost a corker of one in the late arvo on the lure and landed one after dark on a snook fillet using my 4-1/2 ft ugly stick, they are fun on those little rods.
