Busy Boat Ramps
Submitted by Shorty on Sun, 2009-02-01 14:11
Went down to the Sailpowermarine Hobie kayak test day at Matilda Bay.
The boat ramp next door was chockers but a little off roading could be the key to avoiding the busy lanes ?

Yeah that was a classic!!
He was backing down to the ramp, and the trailer came of the tow hitch, seems he didnt have chains attached, or they ripped off!! Was classic, the crane would've cost him a grand on a sunday.
Tho points for persistance, 30 mins after getting it craned of, he was having another crack at it!!!

I have seen something like
I have seen something like before where the chains actually ripped off so this boat may have been fully attached , if you look at the tow chains here they seem a bit light to me considering the boat fully loaded and trailer would nudge the 3.5 to 4 tonne barrier so its just bad luck . Looking at the braking system if he had of had the electric brakes with a break away cord it would have stopped but its an old cable system?

Plenty of excitement down
Plenty of excitement down there today,,in the space of 25 mins that,,then a guy reversed down jumped out to unhook the boat and the car rolled back,,, his quick thinking save the car just in time,,then someone launched a boat and it floated off without them.
Anybody got a video camera ? you could win the funniest home videos for sure

Seen some funny things at the ramp
Once we were coming in and a older couple were trying to retrieve, he was having some trouble backing the trailer down and his wife yelling at him wasn't helping. took us ages to get our boat in due to the crowd of 50 plus poeple watching the commotion, (was the best entertainment in town), took them 3/4 of an hour to get the boat in and had a huge line up of other boats waiting behind them by then,
Also my Dad went out with a mate once after greasing the rollers, unhooked the boat (completely - something I never do) and told his mate hang onto the rope keeping a bit of tension to hold it on whilst he backed down - 30m from the water the boat slid off and dumped on the bitumen - hauled it back up and launched eventually with little damage done other than a small chip or two (glad I wasn't there).
Also once dad and I were coming back in at Wallaroo (SA) at the old ramp There is (was) a channel that runs across the ramp and I jumped out the passenger side and had the boat side on to the ramp, Dad went to jump out the other side and I said to him "get out this side it's shallower", he said "I'll be right" and hopped over the driver's side and into the channel and went up to his nose in water, all I heard was lots of gurgling and swearing, took me at least 15 minutes before I stopped pissing myself laughing (glad I was there for that one)!!

Certainly very lucky
Apparently in January 09 down at the club boat was launching, got in the water, skipper hit the reverse with real force, passenger full over board, skipper didn't turn motor off and man over board has nearly lost his left foot foot and left hand. In experience at its best.

Stuff ups
Saw one with a boat roughly the same size as the one above in an incident at Two Rocks years back.Brand new boat on its first outing, safety chain AND the winch cable undone while waiting for their turn.As soon as the trailer wheels came over the hump off went the boat, straight down the ramp onto the concrete. They demolished the cable trying to winch it back up,only way to go was down.Whistled up a crayboat and dragged it down the ramp into the water.
After a bit of jabbering in Italian they decided that was it,managed to get it on the trailer and out of the water.
Lot of well pissed off people clapped when they left, whole thing took over 1+1/2 hours completely blocking both sides of the ramp.
Bet it doesn't happen to them again with the cost of fibreglass repairs needed to the bottom of the boat
