Buy-sell ethics

Interesting question?

Background:

a while ago A guy posted a reel up here for sale, he was asking $30-00 more than the price of a new one "delivered". I "p'm'ed"  him. He replied to me and took it off the forum, waited for the sale to finish and then reposted.

Now nothing wrong with that, He decided that was the price he wanted and was prepared to wait until he got it.

So full of bravado I did it again, this time it was a rod, sent the guy a pm as he had a 2nd hand rod up for sale for 200 and they were on special for $180-00. No response from him at all, (which is his perogative) and he left it up for that price and sold it within a few days.

Now the question, having told him privately. If he leaves the price as is do you mention the "better deal" on his post, or is that "bad form"? I cant help thinking that, by shutting up some-one has potentially been ripped off.

I've seen guys comment on better prices on some posts and I have appreciated the comments as both the buyer and seller, where do you stand?

cheers

 Mention the better price

Mon, 2014-06-30 16:46

Mention the better price without doubt. The whole point of listing on here is that you are getting cheaper second hand gear. That's the way I see it. Farkem yep it's his prerogative to sell at a higher price but he's fair game on the public forum if his price is too high.

Totally agree with Andy there

Totally agree with Andy there are a couple of members on here that get their friends/rellies to bring in second hand gear use it for a bit them seem to offload on the site for more than what they paid, buyer do your homework and seller just cause you bought a reel for $1000 two weeks or 2 months ago dosnt mean its anywhere near what you paid for it whether its got braid or not!

I think what you did first

Mon, 2014-06-30 17:03

I think what you did first was correct....
PM and let him deal with it ....if it happens again, like the repost then I think Sea-kem is prob right.

most times on here I would like to believe it's just a case of ppl not seeing sales and maybe not knowing correct prices. (things change fast with OL stores etc.)

Too many ppl on this site sometimes jumping to conclusions about others without enough information.

first give the benefit of the doubt.

agreed that they should be told about price issue but not public, having said that you would like to think buyer has done some homework and people that try to sell stuff at crazy prices go unrewarded

I figure it is up to the buyer to shop around for the best price on the item he wants- after all, it's the buyers prerogative to spend his money in any way he sees fit (as the rod buyer in Psion's example, as well as many Ebay "bargains", clearly demonstrate).  No problem IMO with sending the seller a private message though.

Mon, 2014-06-30 17:24

I bought an inflatable for $1200, myself, used it for a year, asked $800 for it as it was in excelent condition,  had 1 enquiry, who never called back. I then found the verry same inflatable being sold in perth for $819, so wasnt deliberately trying to rip any one off .  I still have the thing.

Having said all these things if a item posted is clearly too cheap does anyone tell the seller or do we snap up a bargain ?

Like Chris said, I dont

Mon, 2014-06-30 19:05

Like Chris said, I dont really give a F how much someone is selling something for, only unless I am keen on it and could use a sale price or what ever as barter. But recently I searched this site with the same terms as this title as I have been selling stuff. Sometimes hard to know what to do with holding stuff then getting other's interest, dont want to turn a potential buyer away etc and cunse wastin your time after you've held it or gettin low ball offers to something thats cheap etc. The best is, "Oh, can you do it cheaper because I have to come from Mandurah", kenidiots. Price it to sell and it gets moved on quickly, hate dealin with dickheads

Yep.  But actually quite true.  I was like "FFS, it's $200!"  Ended up selling it to a guy for $100 after he caught a bus and train and walked with his toddler boy in tow to come and look at it.. felt sorry for him (he had the decency to show up swompa)...  then I had to jump start it so he could drive it away....

 Sellers need to be realistic

Mon, 2014-06-30 19:09

Sellers need to be realistic about prices and can't be offended if you can buy it elsewhere cheaper. That is the pro to an online marketplace and the power of negotiation.

It is theirs to sell at the price they think is fair. What SHITS ME TO TEARS is when dreamers arrange a time to come and look at something and then don't show up. I have taken to posting their numbers on Facebook.

Mon, 2014-06-30 20:23

Depends on their intention i rekon.

Some people are asking more because they genuinely paid too much for it themselves.  Eg someone pays full price for a Stella, uses it once then asks $900.  Then compare that some of these EOFY Sales where you get potentially get one for 40% off.

Then you get people out to make a buck, they're also usually the members on here who don't contribute to the site and are here just to flog stuff.  In those cases, I dont see the harm in trying to pull their head in.   Some kid on FB was trying to sell a rod for more than what he paid, the receipt clearly showed that he bought it at the Tackleworld Myaree 40% off sale!

But at the end of the day, 2nd hand gear is worth whatever someone is willing to pay.

Swompa is on the money though, time wasters are the worst!  I'm also more willing to negotiate with people that use manners too.

Another thing that shits me is when people post things on the buy and see with the title (thinking of selling) or expression of intrest you either want to sell it or not make up your mind!

Mon, 2014-06-30 20:51

my take on it, having bought and sold many items on here without any problem.

If a regular FW'er posts something here and the price is too high, well bad luck I guess if someone doesnt take 10 seconds to Google it.

If somebody with a post count of 1 does, then PM-no response etc then tell others here.

If nothing else it lets scammers know that people are watching over whats going on.

Mon, 2014-06-30 22:18

I think buyers should always know how much the market rate is for something they see online for sale, so don't see much use in posting on someone else's thread. You can send a PM if you feel strongly about it or report the post to mods if you think there is some funny business going on.

I used to think myself quite the expert at internet buying having had a good run for many years until the day I put a deposit on something and when I went and had a look at it, wasn't as described. Asked for the deposit back and was given the 'take it to court if you want' response. It has been a bitter pill to swallow. Checked with a lawyer and not much grounds to pursue. Wasn't from this site but a general selling site.

Buyers do your home work

Fri, 2014-07-04 14:59

I see nothing wrong with sending the seller a pm and giving him a heads up on the price, the seller might not know that the item he is trying to sell is out on special some were. It is up to the seller to take action on the price if he wants to or not

If you want to see some crazy prices paid for fishing gear go to a auction on fishing gear, I have been to one a couple of years back and most yes most of the items sold for about 10 - 15% up on the full retail price. I couldn't believe it, it was like watching a school of sharks feeding.

Common-sense played no part in what people where bidding and it appeared no one had any idea of what the retail price of the various items was.

Fri, 2014-07-04 09:13

I'm with Zoom, if they are  a regular to the site then perhaps a polite PM to inform them they may want to reconsider their asking price doesn't hurt, they key being polite here, i know i'd like to know if i'm asking too much but it's buyer and seller beware. a newbie or someone who is just notorious for it, just ignore and if you really want that product, go and get it for the cheaper price you have found.

I just don't appricate people offering say $500 for something that is fairly priced at say $750, i know you have to start somewhere but other times it's just insulting, $625 would be a fair bottom price and work up from there but if people don't get the stupid price then they just tell you that you are dreaming and walk away it's wasting the sellers time.

Fri, 2014-07-04 12:05

Another thing is paying the agreed price on pick up.  Example: item is listed for $500 and you get an enquiry from someone offering $450 and picking it up within the hour. Potential buyer comes to the house, inspects the item, says sll is good and then says "I only have $200, is that ok?".  WTF? Fk off idiot!
