Buying new boat trailer
Submitted by Dirt on Mon, 2016-01-18 15:21
- Made the mistake of getting my old trailer acid dipped and regallved, 1 of the fixed cross beams was cut out and replaced, but the other 2 were deemed fined buy the guy who did the work. Unfortunately they started to show rust not even since months after having it done. Biggest pis soft is dunbier dont sell the frame only like a lot of the others, real shame because apart from those 2 beams the trailer looks like knew. So it looks like I'm possibly up for a new trailer buy the end of this year . My boat is a 6.3 mtr fibreglass carrabean reef runner. Has anyone recently brought one or got quotes for a trailer for a similar size boat. I really like the aluminium trailers with skids lot less parts to rust but unfortunately a bit out of my price range. Any info would be appreciated

How bad is it?
Got a picture? cheaper option is to just cut off stuffed parts and weld on hot dipped galved replacements. I spend more time washing my trailer than the boat at the ramp I wash out everything that water can get into and I had 3 cross beams welded on my dunbier 2 years ago and they are sweet. But if you were going down the ali option I think portsea marine import them rather cheap.

Cut and weld new beams
if I cut and weld new beams then I'm going to have to get the frame regalved again. Is an option but a bit put off as I've already done this process once and got stung.no pics as yet but pretty bad in my opinion

The cross members Probably
The cross members Probably should of been sandblasted for best results.
Anyway. Possible fix is get the new cross members fabricated, get galved and welded in. Use zinc sticks on the welds and possibly a 2 pack paint over the top. It should hold up well for years. Dont just spray with cold galv. Cheaper than a new trailer.
Other option is to speak to Paul from fremantle trailers. There an agent for dunbier. Mite be able to help.

Mmm
if I get 2 replacement beams do they have to be zinc welded or regalved to stop rust where they have been joined

You will need to do something if you weld.
Cold gal certainly has its uses, but, unfortunately it will be no match for actual hot gal dip. If it is hollow section construction, there is no way you will get the cold gal inside, and it will rust from there. But you will get a few more years out of it while you save up for a new one. I reckon my next trailer will be I-section, instead of hollow. At least you can keep an eye on it, and regalvanising is a real option if the finish starts to show rust. Your typical hollow section rusts from the inside. I bought what looked like a good trailer with a couple of little rust spots under the drawbar once, and I was building a new trailer inside two years.

I think I'll buy new
mate of mine bought a multi roller trailer from John papas for his 6.3 mtr glass boat for bout$5500 . He is real happy with it and rates it better than his previous dunbier, definately worth a look. Might even get something for mine still as is has 5 new tyres , new suspension , new lights and basically looks new apart from those 2 beams. Be good for someone who has the time and mechanical know how to strip it down replace those 2 beams, re dip the frame and put it back together, cheers to all for yr advise.
