Buying Secondhand Boat Privately

OK - in the market for a secondhand boat and looking more and more at private sellers.

Now for the question - (N.B. I have looked at DoT site and it doesn't provide the answer)

If I buy a secondhand car I can get a REV check to make sure there are no amounts owing on the car. What process do I take to make sure when I buy my boat there is no finance oustanding on the boat and some finance company wont come and retrieve the boat off me?

 REVS is no more.

Now it's the PPSR and covers more stuff than just cars.

Regarding boats, they are covered there except it does NOT tell you if it is stolen.

Good point about the possibility of the vessel being stolen. I had largely covered that with the suggestions made by Zoom but you can never to be too careful now-a-days.

Fingers crossed I address all the possibilities in discussion and research.

Buying used

As mentioned the PPSR is the only way to go for doing some research regads finance etc.

For determining if the seller is the real owner, you should look for documentation like previous rego papers for both boat and trailer, service records, receipts, etc. Some ads even show the boat in use so a fair chance they are the owner. Check the paperwork details against their drivers licence to confirm the names match.

A lot of this you can't do until you are ready to sign up and buy it but realistically you should act in good faith until a red flag pops up.

Had ticked off most of those things on my list of things to check.

As you say there is a small leap of faith - but taking the steps shared here will make the leap a little easier to take.

Appreciate your time.
