bye bye karratha
well, it has come time to leave karratha. house is packed. boat is sold. reels are seperated from rods and ready for transport. eyes are getting watery...
just thought i'd chuck in a highlights package of a couple of photos from the last year and a half that i've had a boat in k-town. has been sensational fun and i don't regret anything (apart from not getting the boat sooner). in all, put 300 hours on the boat in about 18 months, and enjoyed almost every hour.
anyway, below are a few photos with brief explanation as to what's going on. lots of photos...but only a snapshot and not necessarily the best ones i have, just what i have on my work computer.
biggest haul we ever got. had mates visiting and ended up with this haul. think we got another mackie on the way back in after this photo as well. ate like kings and fed the neighbours. think we only chucked a couple of fillets in the freezer

more of a typical day. just enough for us, my mate and the neighbours. advantage to fishing was that my neighbour would mow my lawn every time the boat went out. the bartering system at its finest.

pic of the boat at whalers bay. sold it on monday and miss it already

another of boat at east lewis on a rough day

first GT. smashed me...

one of my first mackies. have caught heaps of them but never any monsters, biggest i ever got would be 15kgs (not this one obviously)

missus with one

when i had some mates up we went out up past legendre and found three mantas cruising around. we were stationary and they did bog laps around us. they were massive and at least a few metres across. unfortunately cameraman couldn't zoom out any more. i was trying to catch the resident cobia at the time but he wouldn't hook up no matter what i chucked at him

one of the more interesting catches.

missus with a decent queeny
my first legal red. ended up with a few, but like the macs, never got anything truly special

livin the dream

leaving dampier

flying foam passage
big big shark. got a big mackie near the boat before he saw it and took off. 45 minutes and a snapped rod later this came in to the boat. was bigger than my mate and he is 6ft, was also the fattest shark i've seen first hand

smaller one but still a decent set of chompers
and what happens when the bigger chompers get your mackie. still fed three people from the steaks...

my mates trout. biggest one i've ever seen.

from a solo session. got heaps of queenies and lost of undersized trout as well as these two keepers in teh most exciting fishing i've ever had. double hookups, only one fisherman and trying to keep boat away from reefs too.

yellowfin. only one i ever saw. ran into heaps of mac tuna but not many of these around.

and then there were the whales. in plague proportions.

would often scare the bejesus out of you as you're drifting along having a fish and one pops up next to you...

anyway, that's it. will still fish in perth but am setting myself for disappointment after what i've experienced. if anyone gets the opportunity to move there for a bit i can't recommend it highly enough. one of the best decisions i've ever made.

pity you have to move.
pity you have to move. Whenever it comes time to leave a place you always have regrets and wish you spent more time doing those things that you always planned to but never got around to.
At least you got 18 months of good stuff in, sure beats sitting in the pub.

moving back to perth. old man
moving back to perth. old man has a little tinny which i'll use for squidding / crabbing but nothing serious. option will be left open to come back up to the north in a couple of years. i work in construction and my company has just won some work on the browse project out of broome. so that could be an option in a couple of years time when things kick off on site (if it goes ahead).
would also definitely come back if there was more work around karratha. i had the option to stay in karratha and fly to barrow but it meant another 3 years which i couldn't commit to...just need a bit of time back around perth. would definitely move to broome, karratha or exmouth. sorry to those who love it but i've never enjoyed hedland. mind you some of those pics of barra i see would probably chenge my mind...

Well, you had some good fishing there. I suppose you wont be needing those GPS marks where you caught the reds???
When I bought my boat, the GPS marks were all deleted :(

i left a couple of hints as
i left a couple of hints as to general areas in there but no real spots. i quite often found fish on the drift in general areas rather than specific spots anyway. also, the buyers have been around a bit so probably had better spots then me anyway.
i can see myself coming back one day so have got all the good spots listed on my computer, on a backup hard drive, a laminanated hard copy and a tattoo on the inside of my left arm.

ha! yeah that's the one.
ha! yeah that's the one. rusty got a bit teary when i bought it off him. it has been a great boat. or i should say it was a great boat
he did a good job setting it up, the stubby holders all over the place came in quite handy...
we "denamed" it rather than renaming as i'm a bit superstitious. new owner is set to rename it. you'll probably see the boat out and about a fair bit still, they seem pretty keen and were also talking about doing a few monties trips.

yeah the weather was crap. i'd got up at 0600 every weekend to put he boat down dreamers corner for the last four weeks...imagine how depressing that would have been if the weather was good.
i'm gunna get even more depressed when all i can catch is herring...at least i'll always have my photos.
