Calstar 700mh?
Submitted by nickm on Tue, 2011-09-06 11:31
Anyone with any experience on the Calstar 700mh?
I'm planing on building a heavy spin rod for use with 40 - 50 ib braid and am a bit worried the 700h will be a bit of an overkill, not planing on chucking super sized poppers all the time. I can't seem to find much talk of the mh around the web though.
Maybe another question would be what size lures would people feel comfortable going down to with the 700h?
Any thoughts apprieciated.
Cheers, Nick.

700h
I've got a 700h which I built and I think you're spot on with the 700mh for a 40-50lb rod... the 700h is in its prime casting around 100-125grams and 50-80lb.... the 700h doesn't really load up that well without the weight when you're casting

Should you decide on a 700H I have one for sale that was custom built by Barry Taylor for Bluwater for a trip that didn't happen. All the best components $450.00

I have a 700H & 700XH and
I have a 700H & 700XH and the H is really a 50lb or better rod without a doubt. Go with the MH for sure if you are going to run 40lb. Bloodydecks and 360 Tuna are the best place to look for referances to Calstars.

I use a GF700H for 80lb and big poppers and stickbaits, and have GF700L and GF700M for lighter stuff. The MH is right for 40-50lb. We have them all.

Thanks for the info guys,
Thanks for the info guys, just what I was after.
Sounds like the MH will be the one for me, just need to make sure just need to make it will still be right to lob a pretty large popper and handle a reasonable GT should one pop by. I'll make my way down to melville when I get a chance and check them out.
Looking round the US sites the most one of the most comon uses is as a tuna jig rod which apparently it is a perfect match for 40ib for. Anyone up on US jigging techniques and why they seem to favour longer rods than what most of you guys tend to be using over here? Are we in deeper water or something? I can certainally see the downsize of a longer rod in 100m plus.

jigging
I actually took my 700h sambo jigging one day to give it a test before going up to exmouth... needless to say I couldn't break it (thumbs up to my rob building skills)! but it nearly broke me due to the extra foot in length and fast taper compared to a jig rod. Maybe US tuna jigging might be different if they're not working such depths like we do over here for sambos etc.
