Can’t help but be pissed

Well some of you may remember that I rebuilt the internals of my boat three years back. Well it turns out that I got completely screwed over by the Marine Ply supplier and got a product that is beyond useless. Unfortunately Isupply, whom I got it from in Willetton no longer exist so there is no one to chase so it is up to me to do it all again

Careful to anyone out there.

One pro is that there were a few things that I did last time that I would do again. the deck is going from 12mm to 18mm and I am going two laters of 600gsm mat as a top layer as opposed to 4 layers of 100gsm. It will be strong like tractor...

I am throwing expandable foam in every under deck compartment this time instead of just along the keel as that seems to be where the flex and eventual degradation has come from.

Learn from my mistakes...

Use polyurethane foam

Thu, 2021-10-28 18:47

Give a coat with glass . Salt water doesn’t touch it. Good floatation and strength. What I used inside hull and little Andy used. It’s not a reaction from expandable foam is it ? Did you put coat of resin on underside?

That is what i had in the hull though only on the centre voids - i will go all the way out this time as the problems have kicked off where there wasnt foam pushed up against the ply.

All the timber was painted with resin before I glassed it in. Every edge and each side. It was encapsulated and in the pics, you can see the glass is bonded to the timber and the resin layer on the underside is good, the bits between have simply fallen apart.

The first sign of a problem was on a hatch in the bow. There was a bit of a wear point where the 12mm ply hatch bedded into the deck...It almost sanded itself so moisture got in. Where the hatch seat bonded with the deck, it also flexed a little bit and it was all over. I replaced the hatch after 12 months though the rot just expanded out to the hull. The origional hatch was replaced with a piece of 12mm bunnings marine ply. It was just painted and had carpet stuck to it. It is fine after two years of being ignored. I was able to physically lift off the deck and the screws just pulled out.

This time I have the new timber ready and have essentially bit jigsaw puzzle pieces ready to bond in. Shouldnt take 6 months this time!

Not good at all. Upside is now you have done it once it will be better and stronger. With maybe a few extras thrown in for good measure. Good luck with it all

Spot on!

After the initial anger at the whole thing, and frustration about getting to be an itchy bastard again, it is going to be better the 3rd time (we did the boat the first time about 18 years ago)

Bloody hel mate that's farked, especially with all the work and effort initially. But you now know what to target and where, I get it all the time with the weird projects thrown in my lap, always a learning curve but you soon sort out the wheat from the chaff and just do it better and easier

Try using thermolite

Thu, 2021-10-28 21:58

Instead of ply 1/3 of the weight  stronger and is waterproof  so never rots

I did actually price it up

Fri, 2021-10-29 06:31

I did actually price it up though at 4 x the cost it was a bit prohibitive considering the cost of the boat as a whole package. I also wasnt too sure on the ability of the composite material to hold a screw as I needed to screw fittings into it.

Further to that, the boat was too light after the last reno and runs/tracks better when loaded up with weight in the bow (it is a converted forward control boat, turned into a centre console) so there is more positive than negitive to the extra weight overall (stops it slamming).

That sucks mate! At least it'll be bulletproof once it's done.

I thought you were upgrading to an overnighter/weekender?

The more I look the further

The more I look the further away it feels.

Still, i will have to sell this boat to fund the next one and couldnt sell it without it being spot on.

We are 12 months off ordering and with a 12 month build time, hopefully it will be a good 40th.....in three years time.

But I can say that unfortunatly there has been some Marine Ply imported from a place with very dubious manufactoring skills not to point the finger but about 10 years ago all the electrical wireing used in Australian homes & Shops was also imported,(to keep costs down?) it turned out that the insulation is uslesss and false apart then must not forget the Perth Childrens hospital The doors not fitting the water haveing high lead consentrations the Aspestos in the panels still Australians loved to save a dollar.I used braided air hoses on my first & second regulators one blew out nearly took the back of my throat out with it,Never again.
