CATCH OF A LIFETIME!!!

Okay I know that this story is going to sound unbelievable to some but i guarantee this is no word of a lie!!

On Tuesday night given the good weather i decided to launch the boat after work and go for a fish in Cockburn Sound.

When i arrived at the location that i wanted to fish, the sun had just gone down and it was starting to get dark. I anchored up and threw a few handfuls of diced up mulies out the back of the boat for a bit of berley.

I had one rod already rigged up with some gangs so i threw an unweighted mulie on there and cast that out the back and left the rod in the rod holder. As it was getting dark i mounted an anchor light in the other rod holder.

While the mulie sat out the back of the boat i rigged up my other rod (new spin combo being used for second time only) Once rigged up i baited the hooks with a whole unweighted squid and cast it out the side of the boat leaving the rod lying down accross the side of the boat as the 2 rod holders were occupied.

I left this rod while i grabbed my other rod out of the rod holder and could feel there was no weight on the line so i began to reel it in. As i was doing so, from right underneath me my other rod was ripped out of the boat and in to the water.

As you can imagine i was absolutely furious as this was a brand new combo. I made a scene and plenty of curse words were screamed! fortunately nobody was around to hear me carrying on.

I tried to calm myself down by continuing to fish with my other combo. After having one of the hooks on my gangs straightened slightly by a hit i decided to change rig and continue fishing.

After over an hour of continuing to fish on the same spot, As i was retrieving my bait, I hooked a dead weight roughly half way through the retrieve. At first i thought i must have snagged a large piece of weed.

When i got my rig to the boat i realised i had snagged some fishing line. When i got the line in to the boat i recognised that it was the line from my rod that had been pulled overboard instantly. I frantically untwisted the line from my hook! What was more amazing was that i could feel that whatever had taken my line was still on the other end! I then managed to retrieve my rod from the water while holding the line with my spare hand. Once I got the rod in to the boat i proceeded to reel the fish in to find a lovely 70cm Pink on the other end!!!

I could not believe my luck!! This trip turned from one of the most dissapointing to one of the most memorable in the space of about a minute!!

If anybody has every had a similar experience i would love to hear it!

Great tale, nice sapper. You would be the first to get the rod back, bet it felt a bit unreal to look at the snapper and the lost rod in the boat.

Haha, I wasn't expecting a pinkie in the photo. Great one mate. A friend of mine did the same things though his young son dropped the rod. Next cast, rod came back with KG attached.

Quality story, gotta love when a shit night turns into a good one.

It's funny how that happens, one of my most memorable water moments was fishing out of Exxy solo and just couldn't find a fish to save myself (and I've got a hell of a lot of spots) and was getting frustrated and driving all over the place to find a bite.  Up pops about 100+ false killer whales that swim with the boat for a good 10 minutes and the babies hunt down a dolphinfish all within distance to watch in glassy conditions.  Turned a crap day into one of my most memorable experiences and ended up getting two black marlin shortly after, basically because I started to think that I didn't give a shit if I got a fish or not, I'd seen something not too many others will in their lifetime.

 Ahh that sounds amazing!

I am heading to exmouth in 2 weeks for the first time ever with the boat in tow so hopefully I come accross some good fishing!

Last year about this time was my first trip to exmouth and I went out to do a whale shark swim. Unfortunately I was a day late as they came accross Orcas the previous day which I can imagine would have been a pretty rad experience! Not that the whale sharks were an anti climax by any means haha it was incredible

Great story - getting your rod back is one thing but the bonus of a nice Pinky as well - awesome!

Years ago a mate of mine were up at Nanga in a fishing comp.

First morning on the way out into the bay we both dropped lures behind the boat attached to our brand new, never even been wet, Penn rod and reel combos.

About five minutes in my mates rod gets a hit and yep, there goes his brand new combo out of the rod holder and over the side.

Needless to say the expletives flowed freely as we stopped the boat and the dissapointment started to sink in over losing a brand new rod on our first morning out.

So I began reeling in my line and yep there's a bit of an unusual pull, a bit like weed.

As I got my lure to the boat we could see there was a single loop of line wrapped around one of the trebles.

Grabbed the line and sure enough it's my mates line - no fish attached but we still managed to get his gear back.

Ended up being a great week, but sheesh you have some moments when you're fishing!

I saw a guy fishing on the river near maylands, but he was waist deep in the water feeling around, next thing he pulls up a rod and brings in a stonker of a bream, turned out the rod was just laying on the bank, and the fish pulled it in!

 Ha, you’re very lucky

Fri, 2014-06-27 19:30

 Ha, you’re very lucky indeed,

the other day when I was fishing at a lake in Chiang Mai a fella next to me had just brought a new baitrunner combo. He forgot to engage the baitrunner and the next fish hit and dragged his whole new setup into the drink. Not to worry, the guide I was with quickly tied on this big squid jig looking thing and started casting out to where we thought it went, within a few casts he had hooked something, slowly he brought it in (fish still attatched) until he had the rod safely back on land, he then casually handed it over to the owner who reeled the fish in. The rod owner tipped him generously for his troubles..

Not quite as good but many a year back off Mandurah headed out to pull the cray pots. See herring blob bouncing about. Being a tight arse accountant think that'll do for the tackle box. Sure enough, grab it, and on the metre of line attached up comes a herring!! Straight into the pot for some fresh bait.
