Catching live bait for mulloway in Fremantle area
Submitted by Sven on Sun, 2012-07-22 09:42
Hi all
I have been trying to catch Mulloway the past 5 months, and still at it. During summer there where millions of scalies to be caught around the place.
The past month, I haven't been able to catch any suitable live bait at all any more. This is really frustrating, as I put in big hours trying to catch big fish. I have ordered a cast net online, and will be getting a license from department of fisheries.
My question is:
Where are the livies? Ideally, I would like to be able to burley up, cast a few times and be on my way.
Any tips would be appreciated.

Eshed is where I have been
Eshed is where I have been going to catch bait, but without any luck.
I thought the scalies must have moved on somewhere else due to lower temperature or season?
Is it allowed to cast a net at eshed given I have a license?

Your not allowed to use a net
Your not allowed to use a net anywhere in the Swan licence or not, end of story, that I know for certain. I think your allowed to use a cast net in the ocean around metro so long as your not in a marine park or other sanctuary zone but I'm not 100% certain of that so double check with fisheries.
Whiting make for good mulla baits & it's easy to get enough for a nights fishing in about an hour from almost any metro beach. A #14 longshank hook with a thin strip of squid will do the trick for you.

Section 3.4 has local where you can/can't net for anyone who cares to know.

Agree
Agree with fossil, no cast nets in the swan, and eshed is classed as the swan river

Where there's livies,
Where there's livies, there's.........
I am, as I've said, merely competent. But in an age of incompetence, that makes me extraordinary.

Thanks for all your comments.
Took your advise Callum24, and caught some squid at south mole last night.
This morning I caught a monster 'Gummy Shark', about 1.5 -2m long on Squid head.
Took me about 1 1/2 hours to get him in, and was a the greatest fight I've had with a fish.
The hunt for big Mulloway continues with a big smile on my face.
Thanks for all your comments.
