Catching Occy

With the price of occy these days I am going to try to catch my own. Anyone else having a go?

Trigger traps or occy hide traps?

And what about theft? I am thinking to put my cray number on the floats, we know what happens if you get caught pulling other peoples gear.

Comments? so many questions!!

with bait occy now commanding $35 a kilo in tackle shops and it  is simply CRAP imported rubbish i found premium eating grade occy in Malaga ( even worth the drive from south of the river ) at $30 a kilo .......still makes a trip out not exactly cheap.  Squid tubes (NZ imported) are better value but not quite as good as occy mind you the gummies seem to love squid rings raw as much as I do cooked in salt and pepper coating

Shore Catch

I bought some Occy from Shore Catch a couple weeks ago, their Geraldton Occy which was $32/kg. Expensive yes, but i reckon the quality of it is far better than the stuff you get from tackle shops.

There's plenty at Garden Island. They are coming up in the cray pots hanging onto the bait baskets. I had to reset a pot as I was not happy where I dropped it & after 5 mins on bottom there was already a big one in there feeding.

occy

You can put No's on you floats but i don't think it would carry much weight as no license is required so maybe no rules broken. They are a lot of PVC pipes being used as pots now. You can block one end with concrete or leave both ends open it doesn't seem to make much difference to the occy.

We used to use an occy hook to pull pots, just a bit of round bar bent into a U shape with a longer bit that can be attacked to a pole. just pull up slide the U bit it to the pot and hoist it up Fresh water seemed to scare the occy out or use a blunt billy pushed in to force it out. Works a treat. And remmber most occy pots are emptied by divers.

Ive had a few sets over the years (terracotta)...both lasted 1 week before going missing.

You need to drop and dive them, no float or there gone.

I had mine go missing twice

I had mine go missing twice too and was thinking of a small crab float between 2 pots in about 5m and using a grapple to pull them up.

My uncle drops his trigger traps out of Dawsville and uses a tiny float that he's painted blue and has managed to avoid theft that way.... albeit not exactly legal.

What if you put the pipes in

What if you put the pipes in a cray pot solely for occy fishing, at least the risk of gear tampering would be reduced.

A friend of mine has told me

A friend of mine has told me he puts trigger traps on a metal frame with a pipe either side facing the opposite way to trigger trap and the pipes catch more occy. He fishes them in craypot areas.
