Catching Salmon & Bait Advice

OK - so I went to one of the local beaches fishing off the rocks and caught some herring / gardies - then spottes salmon around the rocks and got all excited. Pulled out my line, change leader and hooks and tried all kind of baits (dead) and the salmon gave no interest!! - at one stage they were 5mt away from me!! - very frustrating - good size salmon!

In this situation - what would your advice be on bait selection and or / using a lure??

Live bait....

Usually when they get picky, you can try smaller baits, eg cutted mulies or chunks. Another option is use livebait, eg herring or gardie.

Otherwise if all else fails, they are just not in a feeding mood.

live herring work wonders, we fished a gutter on the south coast with not a bite. caught a herring and threw it back out and was smashed as soon as it hit the water.

they love live mullet! I hooked 3 today, landed one using mullet. Its the only thing they will take, you could almost hit them in the head with lures and the still wont have a go. We tried live-ish whiting, they come up and had a look but no strike, they wanted the mullet!

well - reports look promising as it seems there are small break away groups close in to reef structures and rocks, - some nice ones caught over the weekend - this will be my mission for the next month!!
