Cats at Hillarys - killem all!

Took the young Speedgull to the northern side of Hillarys marina on Sunday arvo for a quick fish.

All these cats lurking in and around the rocks. What's that all about?

After finished fishing and off to pick up Mrs Speedgull the boy looks at me and goes "what's that smell!" while pulling a face to match the question.

Quick search revealed he'd stepped in cat shiat!

I'm not a cat lover by any measure but seriously what is up with all that. Is this someone's idea of a Seagull containment policy or something.

Who should I call to address this, I mean all that cray bait!

Yeah i was suprised as ive only just moved up nor and started fishing there, sure are a lot of them.... A few locals said that people whono lomger want their pets dump them there and now there is a feral population going! The cat haven may trap them as ive had them in to get a feral population that were living in my neighbours back yard.

Was fishing one afternoon

Mon, 2013-09-16 15:29

down there off the rocks, not much happening, i was sitting watching my rod when a cat turns up next to me meowing out loud and looked real dirty and hungry had its eye on my bait. I felt kinda sorry for it so i peeled a prawn and reached the prawn over to it and he ripped his claws into my hand grabbed the prawn as i dropped it and took off, drew blood - next time there will be a hook and line attached to the prawn.

I was fishing Hillarys north wall with some mates around 12 years ago and as we were packing up late one night a bloke from Karratha rocked up with his pitbulls.  He then instructed the dogs to 'get em' and the pittys shot off like bullets hunting down the cats lol! He said its ' good practice for the dogs ' at which point we left as the owner seemed a bit of a loose unit. . . Anyone on this site have dogs . . . . .?

Disagree with the hate

Mon, 2013-09-16 18:57

Disagree with the hate towards cats.

I have a couple of indoor cats and they never go outside. Very affectionate and loyal with unique personalities.

Hell mine waits for me on the hallstand when i get home to greet me with a head bump.

Most people who've had bad experiences with cats as pets are the ones who buy a cat and just let it run wild, so what could you really expect from it (Most cases not all)

I've had dogs before and I love my cats as much as the dogs i've had so I can't comprehend joking about using them as cray bait or butchering them.

If someone joked and said a staffy was excellent cray bait people would cry bloody murder

It sucks that there's irresponsible people who dump cats, don't neuter and contribute to these situations but the cats didn't ask for it so how about a little more trap and euthenize and less rip them to pieces

No I don't support greens, Yes I hunt animals for food. Never hurt animals because it's humourous or they're a nuisance

You're welcome to your own opinion but come on...

In this case

Mon, 2013-09-16 20:21

I dont have sympathy for them, they are prolific breeders. Cats slaughter native birds and wildlife, if people cant own them responsibly they shouldnt exist, they arent native. They are bred as pets, they have no other use, noone owns working cats.

If the area was overrun with feral staffy's, what do you think the council would do?

When i lived in Gero you rarely saw stray cats....

Well said Tradewind have too

Tue, 2013-09-17 10:43

Well said Tradewind have too agree with you on that

After getting woken up by my wife on Sunday morning to be told that there were two dogs at our front door and one of them had just just killed our 18 year old cat,not exactly a great topic for me at the moment.

I do say this that we have one indoor cat that the wife rescued from a meathead in Kelmscott who was trying to put a litter of kittens in a craypot 2 years ago this cat is as dopey as and a lovely cat. the guy ended up being fined $10,000 and if I ever caught someone trying to do that to a cat they certainly would not be very happy after  had got thru with them.

The problem with feral cats is the reflection from the previous owner,I am all for trapping feral animals and putting them down humanly but some of the nomadic comments on here really make question where you guys come from and your state of mind.

adopted by a beautiful cat that somebody dumped in our back yard (found out from the vet she is a short haired Persian, a Exotic cat) and is bigger than our dog, she is a inside cat never out at night and is microchiped/sterilized.  I hate to see the poor things being dumped.  Agree with you Tradewind, think they should be caught by the Council and humanely put down.  Irresponsible owners that can't be bothered with their cat/dog or spend the money to get them sterilized are the problem.

We also have a rescue Silky Haired Terrier X that we got from the Geraldton Dog Rescue he is microchipped and sterilized, you must be a responible cat or dog owner otherwise don't bother having a fur baby.

Hubbie the same he loved going out, shooting rabbits, ducks or kangaroos to eat but you do something to any 4legged animal and you won't walk away.

I agree lastcast, watching the eyes roll in a Tabby or Fox as the 250 hits its mark is very satisfying.... I`m not in anyway inciting cruelty here but go get em boys.... Tradewinds your story brought a tear to my eyes... My old cat Fluffy was sent to heaven with the old Semi-auto .22 He was a good idea as a grommet but then I started to understand how effective they are at killing anything that moves. We gave him a small plate of mullet as a parting gift then "pop" Fluffy went to heaven... Inside cats are safe... Register, de-sex your cat and don`t let him out of your yard or else he is fair game....

Tue, 2013-09-17 11:16

Yeh agree too.
Just want to add a story to the debate, a while ago at a mates semi rural property near Wattleup (where there is bush nearby), we were sitting around drinking etc when his dog came racing in from the bush with something in it's mouth. We we're all "what's that, a rabbit?" and my mate (dog's owner) goes and looks at it and goes "nah it's just a bandicoot" and proceeds to give the dog pats and scratches and "good girl" etc etc.
I think it was actually a Quenda or something, but the point is... f*** it, you should get the point.

Just that some people go on

Tue, 2013-09-17 12:49

Just that some people go on about how cats kill native animals etc, but never mention dogs. No one ever talks about the fact that dogs attack (and sometimes kill) people, including little children. And, that there are feral dogs (anyone that's worked on a minesite might have seen some), which no doubt kill native animals.
Yet, if someone started a thread talking about killing dogs, every man (and his dog) would have a shit fit.
Double-standards is all i'm getting at. No-one jokes about swerving to hit someone's pet dog just for laughs.

Was once fishing at karri valley resort and saw a guy drop a trap in the creek he had previously set that had some feral cats in it. They circumnavigated that trap at a rate. For a little while. Suprised to see him do it in full view of what might have been a paying visitor, although we might have caught him off gaurd. Have no problems with catching them in places like that

I have shot many a feral dog

Wed, 2013-09-18 07:56

I have shot many a feral dog in the kimberly.  Bloody camp dogs end up going wild and hunting in packs, killing calves as they are being born, having a bit of a chew, then moving onto the next one, its awefull to see.  I would like to see all feral animals treated the same, culled.  They shoot/kill thousands of dogs, camles, foxes, rabbits, donkeys, pigs, buffallo, goats, cats every year out in the scrub, why should the city cats be trested any differently.  It would be even easier at hillaries, just trap em, or bait em.  Its not like there is a native living in there.  Put signs up telling the public about the baits, job done.

I dont mind domestic cats

Wed, 2013-09-18 17:33

I dont mind domestic cats BUT-ANY cat that does not have a collar should be considered feral and exterminated by whatever humanish method available.

Cruelty is not good for its own sake, but for you city dwellers, be aware, there is no "peaceful" death in nature.

Bambi doesnt crawl under a shady tree and watch the sunset and die in his sleep.

Animals get slower older or sick and are then ripped apart alive by bigger and faster ones. There is no other way in nature.

Doing it right is exactly the

Fri, 2013-09-20 08:42

Doing it right is exactly the point

No reason to torture or extend pain on feral animals.

As I posted above I love my pet cats but what I didn't post is I trap ferals in my neighbourhood and have done at previous workplaces.

We get a lot of feral cats in Maddington and I see a lot come through my back yard. For years I've trapped these cats and their kittens.

The grown cats are transported to be euthenised, but the kittens if they're young enough I give a month of rehab and if they're viable I find a home for them (as long as they're sterilized)

So I know first hand from scars how nasty feral cats are but there's no need for bloodlust and cruel behavior, just do it humanely & quickly.
