Centre console design

Hi all
Looking to knock up a centre console in aluminium as I don't like the design of the factory console (smartwave sw4200). I think it is too wide which makes it a bit hard to squeeze past. Possibly reducing the width will decrease and hence protection not that it matters much as you're in a centre console anyway
What would be some other features?
Was thinking of a rectangular hatch for storage and a couple of grab rails.
Any thoughts appreciated thanks

Aft mount...
...don't know if it's feasible with a smaller boat, but mine's 5.8m with the console mounted just behind midships. Makes for a somewhat flighty bow, but offers a more comfortable ride when going into the wind and a bit more protection from spray coming over the front.

Hatch to get to the back of
Hatch to get to the back of the electrics is always handy too.
Does anyone know where the love of god goes, when the waves turn the minutes to hours?

+1 - been on a charter with a sounder issue (wiring) with such a hatch on the front of the console - being able to fix the problem in 10 minutes virtually saved the trip

Got 2x 4inch inspection ports to get to the back of the electronics.
Will have elec trolling motor on the front so want my fish finder on a swivel so it can face the front of the boat if required
Another thing I'm not sure about is the height and angle of the steering wheel. Want it to be comfortable to use both seated and standing up. It seems some other console designs are 1m high
Thanks again

console
Mate, you might also consider one of the "tacklebox" type modules on the front? they take standard size Plano trays, I had one on my Southwind and it was great.

Wheel Angle
I had mine with the wheel at a flatter angle, makes it heaps easier when standing as you can use the flat of you hand when coming alongside instead of grabbing bit by bit with the wheel close to vertical
