Chart Plotters

I have decided to drag myself into the 21st century and buy a chart plotter.

What do you guys/gals have and recommend.
Who has the better screens and charts?

I've recently upgraded to a navman 6507 plotter /sounder very happy i did, probably a bit much for my little boat but maybe it might grow one day.
I like the blue chart for depth variation compered ti the white where you have to find depth numbers
Usually looking for others to come aboard for fishing and diving!!

Furuno FCV 585.

Tue, 2007-12-18 14:40

I lashed out  and fitted a Furuno FCV 585 and fully recomend it. Got a big arse cleer screen and picks up the bottom in over 40-50 metres really well. When I got it was just under $2500, I see now there at the two mark. All I need is some good ground to put it over?

Navman

Wed, 2007-12-19 03:01

Just fitted a Navman to my dads boat and although its a clear screen i am not to happy with the chart. I run a Lowrance with the Navionics Gold and find the information in the charts are better than the charts in the Navman. Not to sure about the blue charts for the Garmin either as i have only seen them in a small handheld but at the end of the day buy the best you can affored with the biggest screen.

By the way i saw the new Garmin at the boat show and the new models look prety good but you pay for what you get

We use a Navman on our boat,

Wed, 2007-12-19 08:55

We use a Navman on our boat, and I also agree with bouttime with the lack of info displayed compared to other units.  We also found that after the 4th or 5th zoom in it seems to zoom in too far and seems as if there should be another step in between.

DON'T GO NAVMAN

Wed, 2007-12-19 11:36

noha i would steer clear of the navmans. i got a chart plotter and a sounder and they have both been sent back under warranty with internal problems. my gps antenna has been sent back twice because it won't pick up satalites and my mate has a combo unit and he has sent that back a couple of times. he also had water inside his when it's meant to be a sealed unit. like they say you get what you pay for.   i would be going for the furuno if your willing to pay the money other wise for the cheaper option i would go a lowerance. hope this helps your decision in purchasing a good gps.

HAPPY FISHING ALL AND MERRY XMAS

You can now get a Navionics

Wed, 2007-12-19 13:43

You can now get a Navionics Gold card which covers the whole of Aust for about $400.

I am upgrading mine soon and will be getting another Lowrance. I find them easy to use, have one of the best screen res, picture quality and are value for money.

When i bought mine 4 years ago colour was for the rich as the were not cheap so got the grey scale. Still a good unit but now i can get the same size screen ( 7 inch ) for the same money i paid for mine back then.

I recently got the H/Bird

Wed, 2007-12-19 13:58

I recently got the H/Bird 595C, due to budget and space.
Takes the Navionics Gold cards. Great display and features.
When I can afford it I'll be getting a sep dedicated sounder so the
595C will then become a dedicated chartplotter (and a backup sounder if required)

cheers

Thanks for the info guys. I

Thanks for the info guys.

I have a Garmin GPS now and am leaning towards the Garmin for a chartplotter also.

Sorry I did not make to your store on Monday Ryan. When I told the missus I was going up to Freo she thought what a great idea for some christmas shopping. After 5 hours of that with the little terrors in tow I had had enough and wanted to get home.

Not a total waste thou. I did get into Taylors and found out that my FCV 582, the predecessor of the FCV 585 will accept the 1KW transducer and deliver a 20/25% better signal.
