Cleaning squid tubes

Does anyone have some tips on how to clean the last bits of black stuff out of squid tubes before cooking ? There's always a bit left, and nothing but picking at it for hours will shift it. Any thoughts much appreciated. Cheers, Dan

I tend to not worry about it, it all tastes like squid!

I never wash squid tubes, I merely split them open and jut scrape them them clean with a knife, and then trim for a little neatness.

The tube should have no skin

The tube should have no skin or wings and you can turn them inside out to get the guts all off.

It is a bit tricky to turn them inside out , use your small finger to poke the pointy end back through the body.

You can then use a scrubbing brush to remove the shit stuck to the body.

Best is to use a scaler bag.

Best is to use a scaler bag. Cleaning them at the ocean (e.g. When you catch them) allows you to wash they out with clean salt water. Just remove the guts. Before you dehead them, if you run a finger under the quill and carefully remove the head along with the guts, nothing will spill. You can run a butter knife under the quill if its a big squid.

Failing all that, give them a rinse under saltwater and then get a cake skewer and run it through the tail out the head opening then use it to pull the tube inside out. You can then scrub the inside easier. You could use coarse rock salt or a clean scrubber.

Though having a little bit of ink on the rings doesn't impact the flavour.
