Cockburn Crabs 11/01/10
Submitted by Rodrat on Mon, 2010-01-11 19:50
Hi All
With some tips and advice from Ryan, i headed out in the sound this morning around 6am for a feed of crabs.
Wind was good and the crabs didn't dissapoint. Also managed a few good size herring on sml metal slices.
We got a total of 17 oversize crabs and around 10 or so undersize that were released, some of which were female stuffed with eggs.
Got back to the ramp about 10.30am and enjoyed fresh crabs for lunch and they were very sweet and tasty. Thanks again for the tips Ryan.
Cheers Marc

sounds like a nice day, but
sounds like a nice day, but from what i have heard the crabs are just about everywhere but where you put your pots

We have been putting
The pots out and then going for a snorkel. I havent caught one crab in a pot this season. I have picked up some absolute monster blueys within 5 mts of one of my baited pots and they werent interested. If you struggle with the pots, try diving we have had no trouble getting a good feed on several occasions.

Tips
I wasn't given any gps spots if thats what your after.
Basically find areas 3 to 6 meters of depth and with a sand and weed bottom. Also spleen seems to work well for bait.

Good one Rodrat and Ryan
There is not much that will beat a good feed of crabs.

spleen
Have been trying to get hold of some for a while. The butchers around here don't stock it because, so they tell me, they have to order minimum a 25kg box.
Possible you can let us know where to get some :)

We sell spleen here, 1kg bag $3.95. Plenty of bait from that one pack when sliced up.

I've seen a lot of monsters
I've seen a lot of monsters caught from the new palm beach jetty and from boats around the jetty. Chicken seems to b the best bait
