Cockburn Sea Rescue

I know you all can have a go at us but i would like to put this post up saying a big thanks to the cockburn sea rescue for helping us out tonight we left woodies boat ramp about 1230pm this arvo and headed out all things going good no dramas no alarms no nothing, anyway hour into trip we has first rat sambo on deck and had caught and released 2 undersized pinkys.

Anyway day drew on still no worries so head in and anchor up inbetween islands esky having one lil sambo bout 800mm and a nice black ass bout 38cm nice n fat, right burley up baits out and after a couple hours brother in law is looking at weather since seabreeze managed to stuff things up for us once again, he found a site that said there was a storm heading our way and that it was up at quinns and heading south.....

right lines up lets go home......click click click..... no power what the hell, tried to call up a few other boats out n about near garden no luck. anyway with phones not well charged managed to get hold of a mate and get him to contact the sea rescue. all because of 2 flat batteries which when after a squall had past thru and they had towed us into boat ramp, we worked out was a lose connection on battery... we have never had a problem with batteries on the boat, untill now lol

So yeah a big thanks goes out to the sea rescue for helping us out, we are very grateful and will be renewing alot of little things.

I will add as a funny/not so funny thing the anchor was holdng us and even though rescue was on their way my brother in law was shi%*&ng himself, we did manage to calm him down and we all had a good laugh but feel really bad for getting outselves into the situation.

Glad to hear everything

Sun, 2014-04-27 09:17

Glad to hear everything worked out okay cell.

Only have one battery on my boat - but always carry my Super Mini Booster on board just in case,

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vaSoecK9m3U

Haven't had to use it myself yet but reassuring to have it aboard. Have started three 4WD that flattened batteries due to stopping with fridges running to date.

Can also charge phones off it if you have a cig plug charger

- PS - Should add in the you tube clip he connects the negative cable first - always connect positive first and disconnect positive last!!

Yes agree with you- I had to get towed back in last year.

You will get a letter in about a weeks time from them, showing the hours logged for your rescue and asking you to make a donation to the Group.

Manual Start?

Sun, 2014-04-27 13:07

Depending on your outboard Motor, as maybe could have been manually started. All modern yamaha motors are able to be manually started, haven't needed to do it yet but i have that option.

Yamaha

Evinrude

Suzuki

Maybe able to find more videos on Youtube for your particular outboard, or Refer to outboard manual which may have a procedure for it.

hi guys cheers for that Paul

Sun, 2014-04-27 16:53

hi guys cheers for that Paul H do you have any idea what these are worth they look pretty cool and most defvinately would have helped get  back to the boat ramp, we did lose all our power and there wasnt even enough to tilt the motor up at the ramp we had to take one out of the 4wd just to tilt it up enough to drive hm and have a nice warm shower lol, And Moking we did get a mate to bring sum cash down we were happy enough to give them our fish and money but when the rescue boat uses approx $100 an hour, our hr n half wasnt too bad lol

I paid around $240 from

Sun, 2014-04-27 20:11

I paid around $240 from memory, bit more than other jump packs but they are much smaller and lighter than others so was worth it for me from that aspect.

Was told 2 services ago my battery on the car was on way out, havn't bought new one yet and carry it in the car just in case as well when not on water

PS Aware of how to pull start my motor but would rather have the booster still the same - easier and quicker!!

Are you able to pull start

Mon, 2014-04-28 09:06

Are you able to pull start it.

I run the batteries flat 3 weeks ago, I assumed that the auxillary power was running of the 1 battery but its not.  I had no experience with this and at 2am in the morning had to think quick, I cut 2 meters out of a bit of rope, uncurled 1 coil and tied a knot in 1 end. Put this 1 turn around the harmonic balancer (i think) and after turning on ignition it fired within 1 revolution of the motor. Was surprisingly easy. I have a 90HP 2004 Mercury with good compression.

It may not work on everyones motor but just a thought.

Cockburn Sea Rescue

Wed, 2014-04-30 22:30

Hi Guys,  as one of the volunteers at Cockburn Sea Rescue I thought I would say a few things!

To Cell & Moking, thanks for the commendations and glad you guys found us to be of service - We are always there to help 24x7.  And as for the running costs of our vessel - about $100 per hour is correct.  This really only covers the running (we run 2 x 315HP Yanmar diesels in Avail IV) ... Not replacement which we have to do every so often (Our next vessel is currently being built!).

As for phone logon's - a few reasons why we do not agree to this.  Firstly, unless you are within 5 mile from the shore, you legally must carry a radio.  Secondly, we most rescue vessels carry radio direction finders which allow us to work out your diection - These do not work with mobile phones!  These devices save a lot of time trying to locate vessels who for one reason are not where they claim to be (or simply do not know where they are!).  By all means if all else fails, you can call us by phone in an emergency.  As uncle says, it is best if you have the number in your phone!  9410 1544 is the best number, if there is no operator in the tower (we run home bases at night) then it will be diverted to a mobile to ensure 24x7 coverage.

Lastly - we love pics of us @ work - Moking, would it be possible to get a copy of the the pic above or any others showing out boat in action?

Thanks guys!

Thu, 2014-05-01 13:36

Cheers ady17 we hope we don't ever have anymore dramas lol, and I was planning on taking a couple a pix but since it was raining and night I opted out lol next time.....but I have taken number down and we are applying for the membership that was sent out to us, you guys were awesome I would have loved to be working with you but live to far away to be able to crew at short notice. On another note the new radio is on order as well so we should be ripe as rain on next outting.
