Cockburn Sound fishing

HI Guys

We have successfully been squiding in the sound with my 2 young boys, building their confidence and sea legs. Our boat is a 4.75 Savage with 60 on the back

My next question is they are keen to have a fish so looking for some pointers on where to head to, as last week whilst squiding the had a ball catching butterfish on the light gear, but hoping someone can point us in the right direction of possibly some skippy and best place to anchor and burley

Many thanks in advance for your ideas

Anthony

Cockburn Sound

 Hi Anthony,

I havent fished inside Cockburn Sound a lot, but the reefs immediately to the west (seaward side) of the large causeway bridge usually hold herring and ocassionally skippy.  You can generally escape the wind somewhere there.  King George whiting and sand whiting can also be found in the same area, but there are plenty of butterfish and trumpeters to get past.  The reefs north of Garden Island around Mewstone and Carnac are good for herring, skippy and snapper and salmon at times.

Cockburn sound

I too cut my teeth fishing from a 475 center console. While squidding you'll probably find good ground to catch whiting and KG'S . The butter fish will be everywhere so you can move further out onto the sand to try and get away from them but whiting like weed patches too. For Skippy you could head towards south beach ( or the bent pin) this area thats lots of small limestone ledges and broken bottom. Take your time navigating through there it can get shallow, and the odd wave can pop up on a bigg swell. Burley up and use whitebait on small gangs, sambos turn up time too time. Have a sound around the channel markers in the deeper parts of the sound you will find some spots to target snapper. The salmon will be on soon and Mewstone and seal rocks are the best chance. Good luck hope too see some pics .

Plenty of good fish to be caught in the sound. Squid, whiting, herring, skippy and at the right time big snapper, gummys, sharks, salmon and even spanish mackeral.

look fo the lumps for snapper and the edges of the weedbanks  for kgs.

Caught my biggest snapper (12.9 kg and over a metre.) near the D9 many years ago.

Keep fishing and keep learning.

Regards, Richo.

PS plenty of info on this site and plenty of guys who are in the know...

Parmelia bank was always my go to spot when fishing the sound for Skippy etc. Used to just anchor on a reasonable bit of ground and burley up, always caught a good feed there.

In the late 90s/early 2000s we had a couple of go-to spots for fat KGs and decent sized Skippy on the northern end of G.I

Not sure what's happened in the last 15 years but overwhelmed by trumpeter and/or Wrasse is an understatement.

Try Harding Rock over on the inside of Garden Island for skippy and as many herring you can poke a stick at. Also seems to be a bit of a nursery for very small sambos

Took the boys yesterday, caught a few squid but a little quiet

Had a sound around for spots for next time
Harding Rock I just couldn't find anything on the sounder

Found some big drop offs near the channel markers which look good for an anchor and burley session

Looking for the bent pin area that livewire suggested?

Big Great White must have scared the squid and fish away yesterday

Bent pin

Old name for a large area around success bank. Don't quote me but I think the name come from an old cardinal post that was bent over i fished near that post alot for KG'S and skippy. The post has since been removed or washed away.It shows on your GPS as a shallow bank near  south beach . The two cardinal markers straight out front is right in the middle. Whatch for the shallow stuff! The rocks just inside of them are real shallow on low tide. Just cruise in you'll see the bottom come up and it's mixed with all sorts of good ground. Drag some smallish lures while looking. Goodluck.

Harding rock is 200m south of where it is marked on the charts, you cant miss it, comes up to 3m from 15m pretty quickly.

Bent pin i believe is Fish Rocks on the charts, 2 cardinal markers out from coogee/south beach. Be wary of very shallow reef through there

Fish Rocks used to have a single cardinal right on top of the rock. around 10 years ago they put another one to the west of the hard stuff. We used to catch plenty of herring there and I remember the old boy pulling up a horse of a flatty but that was 20 odd years ago.
