Cockburn sound pink snapper

G'day

With a new moon quickly approaching and a high tide not long after sun down, we decided to head out of woodmans point in my mates tinny at 6:30pm last night. Felt good to be out on the water, as my boat has had some issues lately. Hit the spot before 7 and had our lines in the water soon after with the burley trail going strong. Got onto some nice sized skippy, a couple of tailor and I managed 2 nice pinky of 70odd cm. Back at the ramp by 1030, and my car was still in one piece. All in all a good night out on the water.

Got both on drift bait rigs. First was on half a california squid, the second was on a strip of skippy fillet.

Yeah Clay mate, not a bad spot we sounded out. Be interesting to have more of a sound around next time around the area when it isn't pitch black!

Nice fish

Nice pair! We went out Saturday night to Harding Rock, conditions were great and no shortage of pinkies, but nearly all were 20cm models. The largest I got was around 40 (didn't measure it, just put it back)

Frustrating in the extreme, looking forward to getting my first sized Cockburn pinky. Only keepers from the night were a couple of tailor, with a few more choppers released. Great night, great conditions, but not much to show for it. Hot bite time was the hour after sunset, we got back to the ramp around 1am.

Cheers,

BD.

I try to steer clear of most

Tue, 2014-03-04 18:29

I try to steer clear of most of the 'well known' areas in the sound, especially at this time of year.

Took me a while to land my first pinky out of the sound too. Just keep persisting.

Cockburn sound and my 3.7m tinnie

Thu, 2014-12-18 05:49

Hey guys I'm just wondering if anyone could tell me if it's risky to take my 3.7m tinnie out in the sound? Thanks guys

Check conditions and make an informed decision

 Hi Banjo,

There's no straight yes or no answer mate, best thing to do is establish your own set of rules and risk level that your comfortable with, There's plenty of people take that size boat out and I take a 3 metre Finn spindrift with a 6hp out when conditions are right.  I don't know how much boating you have done or the condition of your boat so here's a few things to check.

- wind speed and direction forecast

- weather conditions (hot/cold)

- swell if your going across the Causeway inlet

- how far out are you plan to go and can you get into a sheltered spot

- boat/motor condition and safety gear/fuel/charts onboard/Nav lights etc...

- communications gear on board and working/sea rescue logon

- staying within the safe load rating of your boat

- are there kids on board (makes a big difference if I go out or not)

It's always a risk going on the water, having good gear, knowledge and good planning is an effective way to manage that risk.

hope this helps mate.

G

 Banjo the best thing you

Banjo the best thing you have done so far is ask first. You just have to work your way into it by sticking to the better days weather wise and slowly go further and further until you know how the boat handles and fuel range etc. Take it easy and good luck/fun
