Complete Newbie To Fishing

Hey Guys,

Id like a bit of advice/pointers if you dont mind sparing the time. Iv never fished before last saturday when we went camping down near Dunsborough, I was watching a few guys casting on the beach thought id give it a shot. Bought my self a 12' Rod  and Reel Combo ( Had no idea what to buy but i walked away with a Jarvis Walker Aquatec 12' Surf, with the Aquatec 750 reel, cost me $40 in a sale so...)

Any way I got a couple of 'whiting Rigs', attached some prawns and went away. Caught a few fish... have no idea what they are so im going to search after posting this. I just loved the day of fishing! Had no idea what i was doing but it was great! Now im back in Mandurah and want to continue but with abit more knowledge. Iv been reading around and I went to fishing shop near by asking for advice but the guy was so rude and unhelpful, i can only assume it was because I didnt know what fish i wanted to catch....as i dont know what will be a good start... i ended up walking out. Iv heard a few people mention whiting and bream? Are these a good start to aim for? If so, would i just continue to buy the 'Whiting Rigs' and prawns as i did or would you guys recomend the soft jelly type lures??... also where are some good spots to start? times etc?

Any thing you can comment on my rod, good spots, bait/lures, hooks, recomended fish to aim for, even the fish i caught!!

hope you can help me more than the guy at the local shop as i really enjoyed the day and would like to give a good go at getting into the sport (also like boats so its a good excuse to get a little one in the future)

Thanks!

Colin

This is a good start.

Learn about the rules and species. The species from the inshore section are the ones you will most likely to get and it will help you identify your catch as well.

Looks like a north west

Looks like a north west blowfish, a tiny pink snapper, a tailor and the last one is a fiddler ray or a banjo fish.

Thanks Likc - Just as you posted it i was already printing that off and also the Fishing Guide for the West Caost Region.

DTrain, cheers, I always assumed Blowfish had spikes and inflated - thought i would of seen it inflate while it was in the water.

2nd Pic

I think the second pic is a Tarwine not pinkie - could be wrong though.

Head into Oceanside in Freo mate, have never seen as many great responses about a tackle store as they get. They are also a site sponser and offer users a discount.

Once you have some tackle to play with get a little rig/knot book and start making your own rigs, much better and cheaper than the pre made ones.

You did a pretty good job to pick up 4 different species on your first try mate!

Addictive

Sounds like you got the bug mate,

there is an endless amount of info here.

with a twelve foot rod i would prob stick to the bait for now, lures can be more of a hassle if your rod isn't suitable.

You have got a few species under your belt already which is a good start, ganged hooks and mulie or whitebait unweighted or sliding sinker or paternoster rig  with star sinker gives you a better chance at some bigger models, you could also use your current set up to catch a live bait and then send that out, never know what you get into then.

and as said above study your rules then you know what's a keeper and a swimmer.

best of luck mate

Good mixed bag there ...for

Good mixed bag there ...for your first outing all be it size the tailor and tarwhine are nice eatting  ...I've not seen a norwester blowie blow up either not sure if they do they usually damage your rigs or jigs though ...another tactic is to watch what the other fishos are doing as in rigs and baits ...do the ole walk by and say g'day ...PS tailor have razor sharp teeth ..Edit - thinking that is a snapper with that line going thru not a tarwhine
