Confused about pinkie size
Submitted by Faulkner Family on Sun, 2018-04-15 15:24
I know i should know this for sure, i was sure pink snapper had a size of 500 out of metro waters and i threw one back that was 480. get home and a friend said the size is 410 .
Some of these regs are confusing or am i just getting too old

Not quite right
West Coast bioregion South of 31 deg S( Roughly Lancelin)-- 500mm North of that to northern limit (26deg S) 410mm . So, In Perth metro, you are 500mm . 500 minimum/ 700 maximum Shark bay. here is a link to the guide

Don't forget
If you catch and keep a pinkie that is just on the 500mm, there is every chance that when you measure it an hour or so later you will find that your just size pinkie is now a couple of mm under size.
Fish when out of the water for a while (as short as 1/2 hr) will shrink a little bit, don't know the science behind it but I have experienced it many a time on most species of fish.
Which is the reason why I don't take fish that are just size, plus you don't get a decent fillet of them.
Just my experiences.

I have a simple rule
If you have to measure it, its' too small. Knowing the various size limits well, it's usually pretty obvious. I instituted this rule with my kids for breaming off the jetty when they were small, as a 250mm bream is really tiny--they only came home with 300mm plus jobs when they realised that.

That's my rule with crabs
That's my rule with crabs unless we're really struggling for a feed.
I was bloody spewing last year when we spend 3 hours catching nothing and then hit a honey hole and we kept the first 2 dhueys onboard at 51 and 63 only to pull in a 76cm model on a jig the next drift. I cried sending him back.

You did the right thing, Jack
I've had to do it myself, keeping a 4kg Rankins then throwing back two Dhu later on, both were larger. "high grading" is always a possible effect of bag limits, and there are those who wouldn't think twice.

you got a good rule
you got a good rule there.
that upsize thing gives me the shits. seen many dead fish floating on the surface on the way in . only time i hate letting the bigger ones go is when you cant get them down even using the release weight.
