Cooler waters off the coast

I heard a weather man being interviewed yesterday on talk back radio.  When asked about the cold temperatures we have experienced lately he responded they have been caused by the waters off our coast being up to 2° cooler, and our summer is likely to be cooler as well.

I assume this will at least impact the pelagics season.  What other impacts do you think we'll see.

Runs in cycles...

....El Nino effect causing weaker, warmwater Leeuwin current. Obvious indicator, two epic salmon seasons in metro area and northward.

I'm guessing we'll see something similar next season before the pattern swings back towards La Nina(warmer water) conditions and greater numbers of northern pelagics further down the coast.

I read an article the other

I read an article the other day about the waning effect of El Niño and La Niña kicking in. The writer suggested that we are just entering a cycle of global cooling that will last 30 years and see world temperatures decrease by 0.4 degrees C over the period.

He proposed that this will lead to an expansion of the Arctic and Antarctic ice packs with consequent cooling of oceanic temperatures. Damn, there goes all the Perth pelagic action !

Southern Oscillation index

This is the indicator used to predict El Nino and La Nina events.  At the moment we are coming out of an El Nino that lasted a couple of years, and it looks like we may be heading into a La Nina cycle.

During an El Nino the warm water in the Pacific pushes east, resuting in cooler water around northern Australia, less rainfall and a weaker Leeuwin current.  La Nina does the reverse, with warm water pushing into the western Pacific, and resulting in a warmer and stronger Leeuwin current.

Cold

Spoke to a pro fisherman who works out of the Carnarvon Blowholes region for the Mackie season, worst one he has ever had on both the Spaniards and greys. This reflects on the fishing out off Gladstone with the grey nomads catching almost bugger all.

Still I won't complain, put the boat in there yesterday for 5 mulloway hooked and 4 landed in water no deeper than 2 metres

 Coldest water in exmouth I

Wed, 2016-09-14 20:48

Coldest water in exmouth I can remember. I havnt worn a wetty surfing in 5 years but this year lashed out and bought one and ive still been cold. Bugger all macs on the westside this  year but there are masses of baby yellowfin tuna everywhere.  Havnt seen these in close for years probably back in 2008 was the last I can remember.
