While we are on the subject of "squid"
I know we all call these things we catch from Shark bay > north " squid", ( and they are down the Qld coast as well) but aren't they actually a tropical cuttlefish? I found the reference once, but I spent about an hour searching the web the other night and couldn't find it again. Anyone have a link or a species name?

Wiki reference above was interesting
They were apparently wrongly identified early as cuttlefish due to their shape. Species within the general scientific name of Sepia Lessonia are many and varied, referred to as a crytic species complex. At least two different species in Shark Bay alone. I personally believe they are highly migratory, at least between different depths, as they can be thick and then just disappear where I generally fish for them. Fishing pressure may have some bearing on this, but they definitely come and go. Small ones are brilliant sailfish bait under a ballon. And the heads are the best big Spangled Emperor bait you can get, IMO.

Kept the 6 smallest ones and
Kept the 6 smallest ones and the heads for bait. Weather was kind today and we bagged out in the 2 hundreds using this for fresh bait. Got an esky full of Rosy's, Goldband, only a single Ruby, then came back in to the 90's for a couple of pearlies and a red. Good day.
no pics, the deckies are so keen they had them filleted before I got the boat away !!!! Anyway we have have our limit and will be leaving tomorrow, get home late Saturday. Roll on next year.
