A couple ID's needed please
Submitted by mateusz on Wed, 2013-08-07 21:26
hey,
all these fish were caught at lancelin jetty.
The first one i have no idea... closest thing i can find in the ID guide is a barra.....
second one i think is a blue sprat?
and thirdly, while i was looking through the ID guide i came accross "sand trevally" which looks like what i always thought was small "skippy" . was just wondering if i have had it wrong all along.
thanks in advance
matt

Used the catch the sand bass
Used the catch the sand bass up at Shark Bay
Parents called them Moon cod which i've never heard them referred to since
They were decent enough to eat if you can get them +30cm for a sizable fillet

Why do we constantly have this negativity on here?. I agree it isnt necked and we dont know what happened with it.
Cmon and lets try and encourage post/photos. PM a question to the poster if you are concerned.

Jumping to conclusions?
I was referring to the pic of the Skippy not the Sand Bass.
Personally I think nearly all of these ID posts can be avoided by a quick browse through fishwreckapedia.

Don't get me wrong
I love reports, pics and questions as much as the next person. Keep em coming.
For me it's more the repeat ID posts about the same species that gets tiring. Perhaps we should have a 'tricky' or common ID questions thread?
Granted he probably has a point with the 'skippy' and I'm happy to retract my 'nek it anyway' comment. My bad.
End of the day I'd hate to see someone get in deep with fisheries due to an ID issue and hope most fishos try to get it right.
Don't know what it is, take a pic and throw it back

No Matt, this is a constant
No Matt, this is a constant thing you do! 1st you jump on someone then when other members say you are wrong to do it, you come back with a 'My Bad' 'Jumping to conclusions' etc etc!... and then try your best to retract it by some other reason.
Just because you think you know everything and anything about fishing doesn't mean you need to jump down on someones post everytime you don't like it!
Do what most of us do, just don't reply if you don't like it!
I know of young novice fishers who read this site but won't join this site for fear of asking a question and getting precisely a reaction you commonly give! How will these fishers ever learn and ask questions if they are to be ridiculed every time they want to know something?

Sand Trevally, probably an
Sand Trevally, probably an Eastern states terminology. Saying that I've caught most of mine from the sand so makes sense.

The sand bass
is closely related to the barra, obvious by it's looks and we caught quite a few down near Tamala Stn, one we estimated near on 7 to 8lbs. We released all of them as we had plenty of other fish.
By the way, all were caught on lures.

Best way to pick a sand bass is by the red eyes.
Get heaps of them up here, never kept one so cannot comment on eating qualities

Actually the sand trevally
Actually the sand trevally (Pseudocaranx wrighti) is a differnt species to the silver or skipjack trevally (Pseudocaranx georgianus). They look quite similar, but P. wrighti has a considerably smaller max size and different jaw shape.

Sand bass
Eating wise suxs. Was given some by a mate to eat and just about spewed. Also got fooled when I caught the first one. Told it was a Barra and got all excited. Obviously was undersized so returned but as it was my first ever "Barra" I was stoked, until the fisho's there started pissing themselves laughing. Never make that mistake again. Fortunately it was years ago, and have barra crossed off the list since.

As for the Skippy, they were fucken size and I kept them . According to the guide they look like sand trevally.
I'll go back to reading and not posting.
Thanks for your input

*Edit* Haha, Matt, I thought the same. Theres always those post mortem fish ids on here, but after rereading, it appears he knew they were skippy, but wondered if they may be sand trevs. Derp

the feed was better
It was a good couple late nighters on the jetty with a couple good mates. Lots of herring, pike and lots of other undesirables. And quite a few big runs. my first sand bass and my mate got his first catch on lure, smiles all round!!!
