Couple of questions about Broome

Hey guys, uni and work is getting the better of me so I'm treating myself to a few days in Broome in mid october. I was there couple of months ago and the weather gods sucked arse, so hopefully this trips better and offers more than a catfish and floods.

Anyhow, I tried everywhere in town (on both tides), willie creek and crab creeks last time, so can anybody give me some advice....

- crab creek seems to get rave reviews but I just got the one catfish. do you fish at the end of the gravel road, and high tide?

- willie creek - was told low tide as there's less water... caught bugger all. any thoughts? Also is it worth moving around much or is it usually alright close to the pearl farm and backpacker parking area

- charters - are there any decent sportfishing charters that run day trips? don't know if it's too early for barra.. and not too keen on bottom fishing

Any thoughts are greatly appreciated. Was pretty disappointed last time, hammered the place with all sorts of metals, jigs and poppers for nothing!! Cheers guys!

Only fished in broome lb

Mon, 2010-09-20 22:50

Only fished in broome lb once and it was hard work to catch a fish. Couple of suggestions is the cliffs south of the lighthouse on a high tide a mate has fished there before and caught some small reef fish baldies cod and coral trout. Around the entrance point high tide baitcasting mulies u can get quennies and if u walk the beaches north of entrance point u can sight fish for small quennies in the shallows with halco twisties the jetty is worth a shot all sorts from there acctually saw some barra swimming around the pilons near the reef outcrop about 70 meteres out. That's about all I know lb maybe one of the local guys could give u more advice or maybe take u out on their boat for a crack at some decent fishing.

At least I'm not the only

Tue, 2010-09-21 10:03

At least I'm not the only one who's found it hard to find fish... you always hear these stories and get the idea that you can't NOT catch fish there!

The only spot I didn't try was Gantheaume... mainly cos I really wanted to focus on lures from the shore. May have to try it this time. The thing that got me was how everybody has a different idea about tides.. even within the same tackle store, each had a different theory. May need to talk to some locals... after all it was middle of tourist season and I think the guys at the store weren't too interested.

Would love a creek charter but I don't know if they exist, specially that time of year.

Cheers for your answers!

Yea can be hit or miss in

Tue, 2010-09-21 12:00

Yea can be hit or miss in Broome off the beach....

I still got no idea on tides... Some good catches in the middle of outgoing tides and 2 hours past low tide when it starts coming back in...

Best bet around town is the jetty where you can access deep water.... Some big fish hang around there....

Try ballooning off gantheume point if the wind is right... live gardies/bait....Or deep diving lures to get where the trout are....

Nth rock wall along willie ck.... Throw half mulies, Sp's for maybe barra if ya lucky(they are there), jack are common for me there, cod, queenies, trev's....

James price point... poppers at all the structurre there... have had some good days there at low tide.... Caught plenty of jacks, cod, cooda and fingermark off the beach there... Take a snorkel too for some crays in the shallows... good day trip up there.. 1hr drive or so...

In front of the bird observatory on resonably high tide... turn off at the boat ramp sign and about 100m to the left is a nice hole, caught plenty of threadies, bluenose, queenies, sharks etc from there.. If go at low tide you can suss out the holes and snags for high tide fishing. Take some photos so you can remenber where snags in water are etc.... Gives you a instant memeory of what is under the water at high tide...

Will be busy that week myself with school holidays etc so wont be able to catchup and take you out unfortunantly...Ill give you a msg if i get a free day... What days you up??

Thanks for all that info,

Tue, 2010-09-21 16:56

Thanks for all that info, some good ideas there!

Probably have to try the jetty at some point, I was just put off by the fact that I had no gaff or heavy handline. When I was up in july I tried under the jetty on an incoming (off the shore) but no luck.

Definitely going to try Willie again.. hopefully the road's better though because the suzuki jimny hire car struggled badly on the muddy tracks! I flogged the area for ages last time and managed to hook and lose a salmon (bluenose I think) after about 4 hours. Area looked sooo fishy but maybe those few days of torrential rain put the fish off haha. The pearl farm tour guide said theres a deep hole directly out from their concrete jetty that has barra at times?

I think last time I went down crab creek road I only went to the end, instead of going left all the way to the observatory or creek itself. Will have to try that next time and see if I can find that hole!

As far as snorkelling goes, I know it may be a dumb question, but after October/November is it dangerous? i.e. Irukandji

Sorry about all the rambling.. I get excited at the prospect of a fishing trip.

By the way, I will definitely NOT be there during school holidays... didn't realise they were on. Probably go end of October then (missus works for Qantas so flights arent a problem hehe) so may be able to get a fish in if you're free, that'd be awesome.

Cheers

Barra are starting to get

Tue, 2010-09-21 17:15

Barra are starting to get active now with good reports from the local creek and the Fitzroy so will be firing well by the time you come up and the sailfish will be thick as theives around the peanut yeehaa

Look up fishbroome charters they have boats to suit both styles of fishing or give Chris at Broome billfish charters a call on 91922127 he has the best setup boat for billfishing, and its been a great year so far with no sign of it letting up also quite a few marlin getting around

Try to plan your trip so it starts in the middle of the neap tides and that will give you a good shot at both styles of fishing.

Willie creek should be good by then also for barra and jacks

Cheers guys all this talk of barra... getting me a bit toey haha

Wouldn't mind trying a billfish charter, never experienced anything like that! do they generally have pretty good catch rates? Might have to give him a yell when I organise dates a bit more. Last trip was right at the start of the spring tides so that's pretty much all i experienced. Certainly made for difficult fishing in some circumstances

Get your dates sorted out

Thu, 2010-09-23 19:02

Get your dates sorted out and lock in a charter if your keen . Late october the sails are full on and not unusual to get 15 or more released in a day .

Broome is one place where tides have a huge influence on the fish, Get it wrong and you will generally get bugger all

Would be worth asking Mik

Would be worth asking Mik but not sure he would travel to the peanut with what he generally does. Great operator all the same.

Cheers guys will definitely

Sun, 2010-09-26 23:10

Cheers guys will definitely be looking into a charter while I'm there. I'm starting to think early November will have to be the go, as I finish uni during the first week. As much as I've been hanging out for it I dont know if having a holiday during last couple of weeks of semester is real clever Cool

Not a worry anyway, I don't mind a bit of heat and humidity, just makes the beer taste better hey? Might have to have a few red cans with the locals!

Considering bringing the throw net up too. I asked the missus and she said we have a pretty hefty luggage allowance so whats a few extra kilos?
