Crabs for bait?
Submitted by Ross C on Fri, 2012-01-13 13:26
So the other day out fishing I was sitting on the rocks and saw those pesky little rock crabs, So im wondering, Would they make good bait? It would sure save me some money just having to grab a few of those crabs, Does or has anyone ever tried it?

Hense the whole reason us
Hence the whole reason us crazy shore fishermen go snapper hunting off rock walls in the middle/just after big storms!

Thanks guys, How would you hook them? Would you just use a decent hook and just hook through the main body or is there a certain way?

in through one leg
then feed it out till it comes through the other side get it as close to the back as possble so they stay live

As scotland say's. Through the leg. For small ones i go though the vent flap. Just try not to kill them (like all live bait ). I found they don't get hit as offten but when they do, it's usualy a good sized fish.

I believe the red ones are
I believe the red ones are great for baldies, but that probably applies more to boat fishing unless you are somewhere with reef very close to shore. I have had some success with snapper and blue bone using blue manna crag legs, three to a hook. i put the crabs to sleep in an ice slurry. cut their legs off and safe them for bait, and then cook the crabs. got some beautiful blue bone groper with the legs.

Up here the same with the spanner crabs gathered
on low tides. Hook as above.
But one bluebone fanatic up here keep them in a hessian bag with sea water to cool them, and then the cracker. He Araldites a circle hook to their backs and kills a pig on the blueB here. they certainly stay alive, albeit carrying some weight on their backs. I think that is fishing fanaticism.

I think he doesnt use Superglue
BB chew on the crabs legs, then eat the body. He says superglue is to brittle and the crab being chewed falls off.
I have no idea how he keeps the crab still for this, or what Araldite he uses. I just laugh at the mental picture because I havent seen him do it.

i can see bait replacements
i can see bait replacements being a very slow process, unless he glues the hooks to their back before he starts and lets them wander around the bait tank with just a hook and threads a new hook every time he needs a new bait.... it would be a bit like jesus carrying his own cross wouldn't it? !!! lol
