Crap weather = 100 hr service
Submitted by JohnF on Sat, 2013-08-31 15:57
No boating this weekend with the crap weather and a check of the engine hours indicated I had done 110 hrs in the last 5 months, so due for the 100 hr service.
Pretty easy, change engine oil, filter, leg oil, take out spark plugs and check gap and neverseize, clean air filter, lube all spots, clean fuel filter and she's all done.
Save about $500 doing it yourself, half a Stella! The Verado manual has all the details, and you dont void warranty (not that my import has any).

that's the go John. Did both
that's the go John. Did both mine, including changing a seal in one gearbox.
Takes a bit longer though due to access of two side by side motors.
Was gonna say your leg oil looks a bit suss then saw where its coming from...
All serviced up ready for the islands John :-)

Good dollars saved well done
Good dollars saved well done .. Duges66 has a bit of know how and gave me a hand doing mine for the first time a few weeks back , fairly straight forward for a basic service .. we changed the impellor and plugs as well, is 100hrs too often for those ?

For the Vrod, impeller only
For the Vrod, impeller only required every 300hrs, but other Merc engines are 100 hrs, so depends on how sturdy the impeller design is.
Very simple to do this stuff yourself and you get to know your motor, which is a good thing in case anything goes wrong.
My old man totally rebuilt 2 115 hp 2 strokes, new pistons, rings, rebore etc. That was a big job but no harder than a car motor rebuild. The new 4 strokes a bit more complex with double over head cams etc, but no reason you should not do the services yourself, as there is no "tuning" required or even possible with these engines except a new set of plugs every 300 hrs. Nothing else can really be done except change fuids and a general check.
Unless you have a spare $500 to pay someone else, why not have a crack.

Geez, its pretty black, Id be
Geez, its pretty black, Id be droppin the oil more often. What fuel are you using John? Just did mine and I hadnt done it since I bought it nearly 2 years ago and god knows when the previous owner did it, still came out golden brown. No harm in checkin the impeller and housing, and water jacket annodes too, you get to see if your flushing has been up to scratch aswell. Dont over lube the impeller either, ends up at the highest point of the cooling system, which on mine is the thermostat, the bloody thing was caked up with impeller grease. Good to see you take the prop off too, braid does wonders for the shaft seal....

what sort of grease do you
what sort of grease do you put on the impellor?
Usually be just dish washing liquid and its lubed by water once its picked up same principle as any Jabsco/Johnson style pump.
Most modern outboards have a labrynth style spacer which "should" stop braid getting in there.

I used the small sachet of white/clear grease that said 'Impeller Grease' when I did the whole waterpump. Always good to take the prop off and get any line off aswell as ensuring the prop doesnt seize to the shaft.

Yeah, I thought it may have
Yeah, I thought it may have been water soluable, first boat, all new to me, obviously there is no real reliance on any lubricant in there, just an assembly and new impeller thing I suppose. I never used anything when I inspected and reassembled it this time, bit of morning fresh sounds like the go, will break down any other grease in the system too

Verado oil goes black pretty
Verado oil goes black pretty quickly apparently, the Verado owners club website indicates this is no issue and is typical that oil goes black. Being supercharged, I presume it tends to get a bit more blow by and oil contamination than naturally aspriated engines. Oil was black but not viscous and not "dirty". I did do a fair bit of trolling, which tends to be harder on the oil, so your porbably right, might change oil over 75 hrs from now on. Doing it yourself is cheap .so why not
Fuel is normally BP unleaded. No need to run premium on the 250 Verado, it gets full power from standard unleaded. Plugs were perfect, no wear, gaps spot on and light brown colour.
Not sure what oil was in it, it was done in the states before it was sent over, by one of the biggest dealers, so I would guess it would have been synthetic. As stated, it is a bit overdue with 110 hours, no big deal, but I was pretty surprised I had done that many hours in 5 months, I was only expecting about 50 hours so had not checked the engine hours for a while. Been giving the new boat a bit of a flogging!
New oil is Verado fully synthetic, so about as good as it gets.
Gear oil looked OK, new stuff is dark blue so its never gonna look clean.

Ahhh, blower on it aye, yep,
Ahhh, blower on it aye, yep, spot on, higher cylinder pressures means more past the rings and more contamination. Might be a bit 'fat' in the tune, better than being lean tho. Guess youd be using premo fuel which will aid in less carbon too. All good, DIY, like you said, save the coin, and get to know the vital thing that you rely on when you head offshore

years ago mate of mine lost his boat over the reef at coral bay we had a mate down there with a light plane and went looking for it and we found it upside down out side the reef , back to coral bay and a rec fisher took us out to recover it , when we got back to tom price he decided he best do a rebuild on it ( an old red band merc) every single bolt snaped of as he tried to remove the head it ended up at the local tip

Tim-O, with blowers, you
Tim-O, with blowers, you always wanna be FAT...hahaha..I run my turbo race car at 11 to 1 A/R, fat and ugly, but safe as houses at 17 psi and 98 premium. People behind me complain about the stench and Greenpeace are considering sending a mobile version of the Steve Irwin to harrass me as apparently it is the cause for the warm ocean currrents off Perth...................I change the oil on the car about every 10 hours and it is black and shitty!
I doubt the Verados run too FAT as fuel consumption was a key parameter in the development, but at WOT no doubt it would be a bit fat as pinging is the death knell for a blown mota and the Vrods run about 1 bar of boost... I like to give it a breif run WOT every run.....good for every engine to have a bit of WOT every run, and good fun to boot!!!!

Haha, its gota be fat to be blown. Ohh, yes, too lean in blown or gassed cars and youl send the pistons to heaven. Give us a quick run down of the race car, drag, circuit, targa? Fellow revhead here, worked on/built a couple of cars for all 3 at a few places I worked, sadly not so much on my own...

Tim I have turbo'd a few
Tim
I have turbo'd a few cars, started by putting a Garrett TO4 on a 4 cyl back in the 80's when no one knew anything about turbos......it turned out I did not know much either, as the turbo was WAY too big for the motor and turbos dont go too well with hot cams.....think came on boost at 6500 rpm....it came on strong, but a power band of 1000 rpm was not much use....ended up getting it pretty good, ran 15 psi, with a home made water methanol injection system which kep pingoing at bay using a winscreen washer bottle and 5 psi switch. Crude but effective, until the 1 L washer bottle ran out of water........hmmmm.
Cracked a 14 second quarter mile with that car, fast at the time!
Then got into smelly rotaries after my mates nat aspirated RX4 with nothing but mechanical secondary mods to the standard 4 barrell carb blew my turbo 4 cyl into the weeds. Luck would have it that he blew it up and I ended up buying it 3 years later for $50. $25,000, 1500 hrs of my labour and 3 rebuilds later and it now has over 400 hp, fully seam welded, roll cage etc etc. Did almost all the work myself including engine build, panel and paint and all electrics. Man I have put some blood sweat and tears into this car!
Set up as a track car originally to do Targa WA, but Brocky was killed the year I finished it which put me off a bit, so I do mainly club events and speed series. Have not used it much the last two years as the boat has gotten most of my attention.
Have done an 11 sec quarter mile but its not set up for the strip, set up for Wanneroo mainly now.
Always nice to talk with another revhead!

Sikk RX mate, looks like a weapon, chook cookas go alright aye, Kiwis love em, there's bloody streeters doing 7s now days. I nearly swapped my HX panno for a mate's aspirated RX3 years ago, bit of a shitta but a welded diff and it wipped nuts anywhere any time! Toys, they are all money pits. I gota a hatchback torry that Im in the process of rebuilding (havent touched it in months lol), street car, but Iv been toyin with the idea of gettin one of those radical racers (aussie race cars), you know the little angry kit cars with R1 engines in them, looks bloody fun, too much going on in my life to go racing tho. There's a couple up at Wanneroo, think they're pushin to get a class for them. I was workin for a bloke and we built a VY Maloo for targa that year, and looked after Mike Miller's VH, thats still bootn around. My boss was off on the Friday to crew for those cars as well as Brock's Daytona, as part of a group, I was looking forward to meeting Peter that night. Ill never forget that day at work when we got the call.

Think I know why I havent
Think I know why I havent worked on it in ages, I cant bloody get to it! Oh, and fishing and other hobbies are getting in the way also. Bit like our old pool table, was used to stack stuff on in the end. If only we didnt have to work, Id have stuff to do 8 days a week I reckon. This ran an ally headed 355 with a solid stick, motor got pulled and started developing the ports with the aid of a flow bench where I used to work, gota finish portin the heads, build a diff bottom end, was hopin for 600hp out of an early port style head holden on pump gas, guna do the body first, would love to just throw a big rpm ex nascar or prostock donk in it haha. I love aspirated v8's, esp ones that turn to 10k, cant beat the tunes of that!

Nice stuff
Nice toys there boys, love your work on the outboard, and very jealous that it takes me 12 months + to rack up 100 hours. I appreciate the rotaries and Toranas, hell I can even tolerate some nice Fords (XB Coupe anyone?), but for a real tuff car, it has to be MOPAR!
Pulled mine out of the shed today for a fathers day cruise (to my dad's place & father in laws place), always reminds me how nice it is to go for a cruise. I reckon my kids love it more than me!
Sorry for the hijack, but didn't think you rev-heads would mind.

Fark yeah, Iv had kids since it was on the road, was always a plan to have baby seats in it for Sunday cruises, got the cash, just need the time and motorvation. XB coupes are tuff, think its glastranomic on here has one, my bro in law has a beaut XC wagon, I went with him to inspect.when.he bought it, cant beat the old real steel cars, a rarity on the roads now days. Mopar, so what is it? Aussie or yank?

Both!
Believe it or not it's both. I tried a picture but it didn't work. Aussie = VG Hardtop, Yank = Dodge Dart. Essentially the same car. Hemi Orange with bonnet blackouts & hockey stick stripes. Mild 318 with cam, rollers, 4bbl & exhaust. I have a std bore (yes, 40 year old std bore blocks are ou there!) block in the shed with a set of brand new Indy cast iron late model heads for "one day" but every time I drive her I always come back thinging the old girl goes OK, so just leave her. Then a month goes buy and I see a really tuff car and get thinking "I should buy a blower" or something!
PM me your email and I'll send some pics. Or better yet, seeing as we are both in Ballajura, grab a six pack and come round sometime!
Cheers,
BD.

Yeah go the Mopar. Always
Yeah go the Mopar. Always remember the grudge meets at the drags and there was a charger that used to go there called Mopar Madness. He used to get the front wheels off the ground in that thing. I had a Charger myself with a 265 Hemi and had it bored out to 273 cubic inch with chev pistons. Installed a special manifold which took a 650 Holley carb on top. I was getting 15 sec down the 1/4 mile with that thing. Also had a standing ovation there one day with my warm-up burnout. I would've got better times I reckon if I'd changed it to a manual. Handling was shite in her though you'd get up to 120-130 k's and she'd float like a boat. As my mate used to say drives like a fridge lol
Love the West!

Just build the second motor
Just build the second motor BG, I regret pullin mine out to develop it some more, car hasnt been on the road since, theres a bloke on Guadalupe with a few Val utes, I dunno my Vals but I think one is a Drifter. My mate had a few Ramblers, a Hornet with a 250 odd cube six then had a Matadoor tank with a 360. We had the idea of droppin a 318 in the Hornet when we were young and green, only got as far as hanging it in the engine bay, smoked some billies and that was it lol. Guess you would know Ben Ludlow, is he still operating? Another dude I used to know had a Dodge Charger, I loved the look of that thing, orange and black too. Hay Andy, good to hear you were a revhead too, imagine if you had that Charger now, would be worth heaps! Should start up a thread in the Brag Board, thered be a few dudes that have or had some cool rides.
I just upload my images to postimage.org then copy the direct link and paste it between [img]http://blahblahlink.com/pic.jpg[/img) but the last close bracket is ]

Yeah I drive past the dude on Guadelupe with the utes, they always give me a wave if they spot me in the coupe. I know of Ben Ludlow, but can't say I know him. Yeah we should start a post "The one that got away", I could kick things off with a Bathurst Spec GTRXU1 and a Drifter Panel Van, man what would they be worth today!
Fingers crossed my pic works...
