Crays

Went diving with a mate off the southern end of Garden Island. First dive saw us each get 5 sized crays. I only saw a few kakkas on also. Crays well I  the reef system. Interestingly though, not all scampered away when we came rolling in. Depth was about 15.

Indecisions and different opinions saw us check the charts and dove a sounding about 600 meters west. Visibility was great but went murky into the dive. More crays on second dive but I had lost the knack of things. Chewed through the air a bit too. Much more kakkas and prawns on 2nd dive as a ratio of sized to u/size butaso more crays. Took me whole dive to get rest of quota.

Saw a nice KGW, mate saw some Boarfish and a small Blackarse.

Weather is looking good most days this week but I should really clean and sort the shed, fix surfboards, and ofcourse do housework and work

We struck red gold at the

Mon, 2015-10-26 11:12

We struck red gold at the start of last season around mandurah for first dive of the season, then next time went diving just north of where we were yesterday after getting some abs off Point Peron and bagged out.

Quite often when Im preparing crays to eat or after eating depending on the way weve eaten them ill check the shells to see if theres a new one coming through. 2 years ago I went shore diving off Mandurah at the start of the season and the crays had very hard shells. Upon eating them and peeling them apart a new shell was coming through. So I think I got there just in time before they moulted.

From what I've seen diving over the years, and bear in mind Im no expert, the crays tend to moult at different times of year for different spots. Obviously there still resident crays.

Ive been shit out of luck (generally) if I can a sized cray in January off the beach north of Perth. Perhaps its just me

 My more frequent of dive

Mon, 2015-10-26 14:17

My more frequent of dive buddies was keen to dive just south of Ellensbrook last winter. Did not see anyone in a grey suit thank fuck but was rather cautious nonetheless.

It was a nice reward diving wise though. Never really thought of GI as a shark hotspot although, that tour operator got nailed by one dolphin divong I guess and aforementioned mate did see a whale yesterday west of where we were.

Prawns

Crays as they are the size of prawns, hence I tend to call them prawns. Should have explained further. Have not seen mantis shrimps, king prawns or other prawns with exception to one dive. Have heard they do actually get king prawns on Sepia Depression west of GI

I can understand why they are called prawns, the size of some of the crays makes you look twice just to be sure. When I saw the word prawns I thought I'll find out about this I may have just stumbled on the best kept secret of local waters, arrh not to be.
Good luck with your cray season, hey and always dive with a buddy there has been a couple of reports of some unfriend lies out and about.
