crays and demersals dunsborough

Hi everyone, great website. Can anyone tell me (I don't want your spots) any general info on where to catch crays and demersals in Geographe Bay/Busso/Dunsborough/Yallingup and what I can expect or hope to get? I have a 23ft boat and will be heading down for Xmas and the times I have been out in the bay haven't been successful. I have been out past the Cape a couple of times to the lumps and that has been a bit better. Maybe I'm just crap at fishing. Thanks for your help.

Same as everywhere mate, you
Same as everywhere mate, you fish in close in the Bay and you will get Herring, whiting, skippy etc.
Go out wide North of Wrights Bank, Coral Lumps around the corner to Sugarloaf and you will find heaps of ground where Demersals are.

Thanks, I searched the
Thanks, I searched the website and it appears the spots for crays are Peppermint Beach, I have seen some pots occasionally around Bunkers, do people put pots around the corner near sugarloaf etc? I haven't seen any on the 4 mile but I have only been fishing the area a few times.

The pros came down a few
The pros came down a few years ago and fairly raped the joint, they potted straight out from Canal Rocks from CowTown to the lighthouse.
You will still get crays on the indicators at Canal Rocks and Yallingup reef. They are not in big numbers though, very few and far between. Diving around Peppy always gets a few though.
Yes i heard people catch at Sugarloaf but be carefull of the swell.

Bunkers
You can get crays in close from right in Bunkers around passed the Quarries to the cape and right through to Yallingup, the hard part is getting to your pots if the swell comes up.

last year some guys who
last year some guys who stayed at my camp grounds caught alot of crays in about 8-9m of water straight out from the twin towers (mobile phone towers at siester park) they said there is a ledge there. fishing wise if you go to the 4 mile there is some good fish but you have to be in the right spot i have not failed yet out there. pritty much straight out from abby beach. also you can give south bank ago $33 19 00 0 E114 58 00 0 that is the roughly the area. and then south of that is coarl lumps and then south of that is yallingup reef always done well out there. give us a msg when you are going out can take you to a few spots.
thanks rocky

Thanks for all that guys, I
Thanks for all that guys, I have just spoken to a friend who said about 40 years ago (showing my age) he used to stay at Siesta Park and they would swim out and get crays under the limestone ledges. He said that there was a hurricane and the sand filled in all the ledges so now there aren't any crays. Is the 4 mile (and 8 mile) reef better near Busso heading east or heading West towards Dunsborough, and are there more fishing spots towards Busso or towards Dunsborough. Thanks for all yhour feedback, I am a bit more hopeful this time.

i wish i am still waiting to catch my first legal dhuy only been in busso for 3 years and been fishing for 18 months out in the boat so stll learning were all the spots are and the locals arnt to keen to give up there spots but hopping to give this summer a real good bash. as to snapper have been around the corner 5 times and always come back with a snapper. i guess that is the fun of fishing trying to find them but have a good feeling about this summer.
thanks rocky

dunno no good
no fish here chopper.
here, no fish.
haha jokes.
mate go off the west coast, read your sounder well, fish the small lumps and ledges. don't wait to see big lumps with bait and fish everywhere as per photos on here sometimes (don't pass one if you see it tho!!). use cray pots as an indicator although keep in mind there's plenty of crew down here over summer without a clue, so don't be afraid to follow your own path. above all leave any non-savoury practices (pinging etc) for Cockburn sound or two rocks.
come have fun.
good luck mate

Don't bother
trying for crays in the bay, go west coast. Out from Canals towards Yalls these is some good ground that holds crays, always get a few out there. By xmas Peppi beach will be cleaned out due to its accessabilty.
As far as demersals go the area Nth of wrights bank holds Dhues, Queenies, Red Snapper etc. Coral Lumps always holds a nice variety too with Yellowtail Kings mixed in. Basically anywhere off the west coast hold Dhues, just need to find likely ground. Don't bother with the 4 mile. Unless you already have some GPS marks it's a waste of time.
Good Luck

Thanks Matt, so forget the Bay unless the weather blows up and go around the Cape. I can see the lumps on the chart about 10 miles out, but if I go around the Cape and fish from say Sugarloaf/Yalls out I should find some ground. Am I looking for the normal reef style lumps or is it flat coral with only small variations, and aboutg how far offshore?

Sugarloaf
If you have a strong easterly and you are waiting for it to drop fish in close to shore just south of Sugarloaf right down to the cliffs, Always get blue groper, queenies, small dhuies and pinkies. Start right in as close as you can then drift out untill you see sandy bottom on your sounder then steam in for another drift.
There is a real lumpy bit of bottom directly out from Sugarloaf about 2.5nm, don't want to give out the actual marks but its easy to find

Thanks everyone, your info
Thanks everyone, your info has been great. I was also told about flat coral reefs about 4-8 mile off Yalls and south from there, and to drive around until I hit fish on the sounder. I did this one day but there was a lot of driving and stuff all fishing.

Met him at his shack at Bunkers while salmon fishing. On and off over about 6 years, salmon, shark and wetlining.

Coral?
Flat sand more likely, starts from where the cliffs start north of Yallingup and runs all the way through to out off Wyadup . There is just a strip of decent bottom about 200 metres wide from the shore out and then its sand, though there is a pinnacle about 2.5nm NW of Canal rocks and a little bit of bottom around it but it gets a flogging from locals.

Don't bother bringing your boat down here there's no fish
Best bet if you are new to the area is head out to the big structures which are on the charts (Coral Lumps, Nato Reef and South West Bank). There is a lot of good ground within a couple of kms of these spots. Look for tiny ledges and small bits of flat coral. Slow right down and have a good look.
Geo bay is is pretty hit and miss but still worth a go. Plenty of ground in the bay but extremely hard to find. Fish the tides and dawn and dusk and you might be surprised.
As for nannys just go deep they are everywhere.
