Crimping is a great

Crimping is a great connection. There is a few little tricks to get the perfect crimp though. Secret is get the right size and style crimp and don't over crimp. I also use a flame to flare the dead end but that's more for peace of mind.

If you dont want to go buy a crimper and cripmps

I find the "over under" then "under over" knot works great on mono up to 200lb I do it about 6 times nice slim knot then flare the end as mentioned above.

Go the crimps

I crimp anything around 100lb and over.  Buy a decent set of crimping pliers, and a box of good aluminium crimps in a range of sizes.

3 turn uni knot.

Thu, 2016-12-08 13:15

I regularly fish 150lb and 200lb  leader for gts and I always use a 3 turn uni knot. Ties easy as in big leader.  If you are using a supple leader then crimps with protective sleeve are the go as that stuff will flatten out and cut through itself under little pressure.   If you use FC leader I usually retie the uni after each decent fish or if the boat was used for scull dragging a decent fish out of shallow water.  It can pop sometimes for no reason.  What ever you use we always  test our knots by hooking the lure to the gunnel or something and test it out . It is amazing how sometimes a knot in  150-200lb will pop,  thats how we realized it would happen in FC and supple leaders.

Crimp all the way!

Thu, 2016-12-08 13:59

We buy crimps in packets of 1000 for $30 delivered off eBay. Easiest and best way to do rigs when joining hooks and swivels etc.

as mentioned, make sure they are the correct size for the leader you are working with, and slightly melt the ends before crimping.

we even use crimps on 40lb kg whiting rigs so that you know full well it won't be a slipping knot which lets you down.

Spit

Plenty of spit on the line before you pull the knot tight and curve of the hook over something solid so it cannot slip off and give it a good pull
