Crimping Mono
Submitted by Casting Insalts on Tue, 2012-01-17 09:45
I am after some advice about crimping mono around 150-200lbs. Never done it but I am getting busted by some big fish in Exmouth and Karratha and getting frustrated ?

Dont think crimping is going
Dont think crimping is going to help any with mono, have a look at your knots or if the break is happpening along the line, then knots or crimping aint gonnahelp much. Go the uni knot in line that big for starters though.

Why the crimps? If it is
Why the crimps? If it is decent mono, you should be able to uni knot that strength line pretty easily?
When asked by a non-fisherman 'how many fishing rods do you really need?' the correct answer is either:
n+1 (where n is the number of fishing rods you currently own); or
n-1 (where n is the number of fishing rods which would cause your significant other to dump you.

test your knots
If you have access to, or dream up a way to measure the amount off pull you can put on your knot, you will be able to know if it is actually failing or knot ( boom boom).
Ensure you put a heap of spit on your line when your pulling them up aswell to get them nice and tight.

I wouldnt say uni knotting
I wouldnt say uni knotting 200lb is easy. Possible, yes, but I'd still choose crimping for that line myself. Much neater too. Which crimps you use and how you use them massively affects the strength. I've tested a few i've done and they can hold nearly all the line strength.
The link Terry posted is worth a read.
What crimp types are you using, are you using the right diameter and how are you crimping them? Do you have any pictures of your crimped connections?
As Dale said, it will depend on where the line broke of course, but i'm assuming it was at the crimp? As a backup you can burn/blob the ends of the line, pull tightish then crimp for added security but a proper crimp should be super strong.

I have been using 150lb mono
I have been using 150lb mono and the knots have been failing at the weakest point so I thought about upsizing the line and crimping to try to retain the braking strain. I have used a couple of different knots but after looking itup I don't think I have been tieing my uni quite right so maybe it's worth another shot!!

I am using a 18000 shimano
I am using a 18000 shimano Saragosa with 80lb whiplash braid onto 150 jinkai leader with single 8/0 hooks. These are some pretty serious fish and they can tow my boat around which is a trophy 2052. I have been trying to target reds when this happens. But I suspect they are big cod but not sharks as there is is too much head shake I have got the Saragosa full lock and still loosing line in the runs which is pretty good fun but I would like to land one of these fish

I still reckon uni knot. I
I still reckon uni knot. I find the 200lb Jigging Master stuff pretty easy to tie in that, you just dont do more than 4-5 wraps max (6 is a bitch to pull tight).
If it is still busting with that, then the problem has to be you getting dragged into structure, or dodgy leader, because your 80lb mainline (or something else) will give way before a knot in 200lb leader ever will.
Make sure you are not using any old crappy leader either. I went on a Montes charter and we were doing a bit of bottom bashing. I got busted off 3 times in 3 drops due to failures in the 150lb leader (where it went out to the droppers on the paternoster). Was using charter operator's rigs on my gear. Switched to my own 150lb leader (Jigging Master) and never had another bustoff, and was fishing higher drag.

If you feel the need to crimp
If you feel the need to crimp the best set of crimpers for that diametre are the green jinkai crimpers. Match your ally sleeve to the line diametre, for 200lb I look for the longer crimps so you can crimp 2 times on the one crimp.
I actually fish.

Crimps
I crimp all my rigs you need a good crimper and don't over do it or you cut into line 2 crimps per sleeve started to use the brass ones lately better than Ali ones It's so much quicker an neater only one knot to tie braid to swivel

I crimp my mono for all my
I crimp my mono for all my shark rigs. I use brass double sleeves and only crimp lightly to tight and the mono will be damaged. I've been using 130lb and with some fights lasting over an hour on a very heavy drag seems to be holding up very well. Also because im crimping I've been using the tough leaders instead of the regular supple stuff.
always looking for a new challenge!!

As Dan said uni knot should
As Dan said uni knot should be ample. If the mono is supple enough then it should be fine for a 3-4 turn uni
I uni knot up to 220lb for my GT leaders fine

Rather than saliva, powdered
Rather than saliva, powdered graphite is great for lubricating the knots if you are knotting the heavy stuff.
